Simon Hughes, 5, killed the alligator of a lifetime during a hunting trip in east Texas with his new junior-sized .410-gauge shotgun.
Hughes of Goodrich killed an 800-pound, 12-foot 6-inch alligator that smashed the state’s previous record kill by 1 foot and 8 inches.
Hughes learned how to shoot and drive all-terrain vehicles when he was only 4-years-old.
“That's the way it is in rural areas,” Scott Hughes, his father, said. “We don't think of guns as playthings or something used in videogames.”
Scott had obtained state permits to hunt two of the 40 alligators living in his 5,000-acre spread near Lake Livingston. Scott said he knew something big was out in the swampy area because it was driving smaller alligators from the swamp into his stock ponds.
The hunting party baited a hook with armadillo road kill and returned the next day to see the line pulled taut with something lurking beneath the 4-foot waters. The team attached the line to an all-terrain vehicle and waited for the gator to surface.
Simon was ready with his gun and shot the alligator once in the head. The group’s hunting guide Chuck Cotton shot the alligator again to be sure it was dead, but the shot proved to be unnecessary because Simon’s first shot was fatal.
Taxidermist Stephen Moye said the head weighed in at 104 pounds by itself.
“My friends were proud of me, and I was proud of myself,” Simon said. “It's humongous!”
Simon plans to bring the reptile’s 12-inch bite to his class for show and tell.
