Talking Extreme Landings at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Airport

I loved this (now closed) airport.

Extremely exciting takeoffs and landings, not for the timid.

My favourite is the Korean Airline 747 landing near the beginning. He lands like he's parallel parking a car.

Serious wind issues. Isn't that where they built the new airport on an artificial island?

Yes, the new airport has been operational for years. Way out in the ocean off an island. Boring straight in landings now!

I got to fly into Kai Tak many times in the early '90's. Wild ride. They actually have a target painted onto the side of a mountain to aim at for the approach. And they get very close before they bank to start the landing! Standing in Kowloon City, you can almost count the rivets as they fly over head on final. You swear they are no more than 100-ft over the rooftops. The noise was deafening. Was voted the hardest commercial airport landing in the world by the pilots.

I'm surprised I never heard of any major crashes there, that approach looks pretty tough with the crosswinds

I think I was in a landing in China just like the one at 2:20, 1/2 down the runway before touching and then he locked the brakes....... it was the worse landing I can say I've ever been in or seen (and I"ve been in airplanes off & on privately for 45 yrs ). The tires were a smoking and screaming, and I was sure a tire was going to blow..... which would put us off the runway and possibly flipping in no time at all.... I pulled my belt tight just to be able to remain in the seat from the forward force. I was also ready to pull it off and hit the emergency exit right in front of me. LOL.

FUN is the word, I enjoyed landing there. A little tear formed when I heard they closed it.

A sharp banked turn on approach over a densely populated area landing in severe cross winds...... what's the worst that could happen?

I was on a Cathay Pacific flight that landed there in a bad rain and wind storm. Fortunately we had been there before, so we were drunk on their free booze in anticipation of the normal landing. Still scared us to cold sweats.
