I don't think that they've started the new census yet.
It was either a scam, or possibly you were about to be robbed (he/person behind the "worker" would've jumped out and rammed the door, knocking you down and overpowering you)... but they decided to hold off because it probably because pretty clear they should pick someone else.

If I'm not doing anything important, I mess with people who call me. I'm on the "Do Not Call" list, but some still get through. So I ask them if they would like to join the Church of Universal Light, sign up for a Multi-Level Marketing scheme or pretend English is my 2nd language.

I was getting five or six calls EACH DAY from some place offering me information on going back to college. After two days of telling every one of them that I wanted to be removed from their list, I let my husband answer the phone (I love caller ID). They asked for me by name, so he told them he was me (with my permission, of course).
They stopped calling when they were told I was transgendered Columbian national, not a legal US resident, and had never finished high school.

Wrong, we have already gotten our census survey and returned it.
And yes there are requirements by federal law to provide the census, or dept of labor, or any number of agencies information. Some businesses get them almost annually and there can be fines associated by not filling them out.
Also, the census bureau is doing some follow up calls related to the surveys sent out. They called us back and I gave them some additional information.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

I love calls like that. I string them along like you don't know. I would have used my Forest Gump impersonation. Many of these calls originate from India and they have no idea about "ah box of choco-late!" They get so annoyed after repeating my phrases that they hang up frustrated. Who wins? I do!
