If you think Fox or TLC are exploitative and cruel to the people they feature on some of their programs, keep this in mind: Fox wouldn’t last a month in Japan. In this clip from Japanese TV, a man is led to believe that a sniper is killing the people in the room with him. HA HA HA HA! Hoooo, that’s rich! Did you see the way he was paralyzed with the fear of imminent death? Oh, man, Japan. You are such a kidder.

.....I pray for the safety of the crew that staged this "event" if they ever try this in the USA.
I know not what this "overkill" means.
Honing the knives, Cleaning the longguns, Stocking up ammo.

ALL of this is scripted. EVERY time.
No TV show is going to open themselves to a lawsuit for "intimidation" or "emotional distress" because they wanted to scare the bejeezers out of someone for laughs, ratings, and advertising dollars.
The show Fear Factor is another one that is totally scripted. Were these shows not scripted the results could be violent and the show "actors" could be in real dangers. Thus, the show promoters/producers/insurance company require that the show be scripted and releases signed BEFORE anything happens.
Reality TV has NEVER been "real."

+1 to that.
A lot of people can't even imagine the real consequences of a show like Fear Factor, which is why it made it more then 1 episode. They may get away with it once or twice, but eventually there is going to be an actor bleeding out and it isn't so funny anymore...which leads one to the conclusion that it must be scripted and is 100% faked.

I'm not so sure, this is Japan we are talking about and they have some pretty messed up shows.

I spent a couple of years working for a production company that did nothing but reality shows (several of which you have seen or at least heard of). The legal paperwork for these shows (and everyone involved) has long since been nailed down to a science along with the preparation of those involved. For the actors... sorry, "participants"... the paperwork starts when you show up for your audition... oops, I mean "interview"... and nothing is left unsigned by the time you show up on location.
There are varying degrees as to how much a participant will know in advance, but none of them walk into any situation entirely clueless.
If there's one thing reality tv does NOT portray, it would be reality.
