    Speculation about 2008

ExSoldier762 made the following comment in a 2nd Amendment thread about New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin.

"Which got me to pondering, sure there are a lot of pro 2nd Amendment cops out there. But how many would refuse a direct order from a superior or a ranking politician to go forth and grab guns? Let's say that the GOP is swept from office (Oval and Congress) in 2008. Hillary and company get into power. They run rampant and a gun ban passes. Chuckie Schumer's and Slimestein's wet dream....Mr & Mrs America...TURN THEM ALL IN! Just like Slimestein said on CNN a few years ago. The word goes forth to the states, the state governments pass the word to the locals. Yada Yada Yada. The Chief looks at Deputy Dawg and says: Your neighbor down yonder has a great collection of Trap & Skeet guns. Go get 'em. ???? ***? Over? Coming in broken and stupid, over?"

In Dec. 2003 Baen Books (Science Fiction publisher) published a book called A State of Disobedience by Tom Kratman which is build on exactly that premice. Kratman changes names to protect the guilty. In the book the calls the future president "Wilhelmina Rottemeyer". She is using her maiden name because she has divorced her husband the former president. If you are interested in how the story plays out you can read the first 7 chapters of the book free by using this link:

    http://www.baen.com/chapters/W200312...1709.htm?blurb

Then if you want to read the rest of the book you can buy it in digital form for $4.00 at

    http://www.webscription.net/

Let me know what you think of Kratman's first 7 chapters even if you don't finish the book.

I don't think we are at the point yet where, even if they controlled both the White House and Congress, the gun grabbers/ant-freedom types could ban all civilian ownership of firearms. We may still be headed that way, just not yet. Even if they did pass the law groups like the NRA, GoA and others would tie it up in court for years as unconstitutional.

I agree with you, but there are a couple of scenarios where it could possibly get that bad very quickly. Federal judges are appointed by the president. Right now there are dozens of positions either not filled or filled by persons who are due to retire with in the next several years. President Bush has not been able to get his appointments approved by Congress. If there is a sweep in '08 the Democrat congress and president would be able to fill these positions with liberal ideologs. Second possibility would be for a Democrat congress to pass a constitutional amendment. It would then be up to the states as to whether to ratify this amendment. I there was a sweep that included enough state legislatures the amendment might be ratified. Courts including the Supreme Court can only interpret an amendment; they cannot declare it unconstitutional. The amendment would be the law of the land until it could be repealed. By that time it could be too late. I don't forsee either of those happening, but it is remotely possible that one of them could.

    Thanks for the input.

We've gone through dark ages before (93-00), taken some setbacks, but survived.

    Right on target, Weeg.

That said, if you're eyeballing a firearm likely to be covered by a renewed "Assault Weapons Ban", this might be a good time to buy it...

Fortunately this is still all rather "far out there" kind of stuff. However, how many times can we as a nation take these kind of setbacks before we loose what the American ideal is all about? Our government isn't any different from any other governmental system in history, the power there attracks people who like power, who want more power. As a people we have done fairly well at keeping that power for ourselves for the last couple of hundred years, but it takes constant effort. I think the problems started around the Civil War and have continued to basically go downhill since then, with several plateaus and sometimes spikes back in the right direction. How long was the Roman Republic around before it became an empire?

Again, I am not the alarmist type and don't think we are at that point. But I do belive that it is possible, history teaches us so, and that it is every Americans responsibility to prevent it.

About the book, I found it to be an interesting read. Not particularly well written, IMO, not horrible but not the greatest either. But it is an interesting topic.

There should be enough of us that if this did happen a revolution would occur. At least I hope so, we're almost overdue now I think.
