    Now, clever wording doesn't make up for the fact that it changes things.

    The only two persons mentioned in the race are the reader and the "second" person. Of two mentioned, if one person passes the second person, then that person must now be in first place. Had the wording been "second place" instead of "second," the meaning would have changed. That is a test of logic; the other, merely of clever word play.

    Tell me ... what position would the second person be in if the other were to clop him upside the head? First-rate trouble, I'd say. No longer playin' second fiddle, I'd say. There's no two ways about it.
