Angry Rant: NY State to Issue (and Charge for) New License Plates

This is my current rant for the week. Our beloved govenor has decided that to help close the multi-billion dollar budget deficit, NY State will be replacing the current blue/white plates with the new and improved "Empire Gold Plate". Of course, every driver now has to pay for it. No choice.

There's nothing wrong with our current plates and it's just another way to rip us off.

    OK, I'm done.

Gotta say, that new plate is hideous! Looks like the governor himself designed it.

The scary thing is what's to keep them from doing it every few years whenever they need more money.

Dang, another reason to love Montana!!! They are going old school with their new plates and it is for the basic plate that you don't have to pay extra for!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the old plates (prior to the current blue and whites) looked just like the "new" golden ones, just without the blue border on top; right?

    And yes, that's ridiculous.

Has the governor explained what the improvement is? Or is it merely the bald-faced financial drain of the People that it seems to be?

Infinitely smarter would be to charge the same $100 per person, but then actually build something useful ... such as repairing a bridge, or fixing a sewer system, or cleaning up the toxins in the water system, or any of a thousand other things for which there would be a tangible asset put into place. Though, that would still leave a comparatively large impact on the poor, something approaching an irrelevancy to $Billionaire Bloomberg and other wealthy elitists.

    A few oldies:

It's just a way to solve the unemployment problem in the State.

"Auburn Correctional Facility, the maximum security prison that has
manufactured the state's license plates since 1923, is gearing up for the new
    demand.
About five million new plates, double the usual number, will be produced by
the inmates, who are paid 16 to 42 cents an hour for their labor, depending on
experience, according to Erik Kriss, a correctional services spokesman. (Inmates
can use the money at the prison's commissary or send it to family members.)

The current 100-man workforce will be expanded to 220, Mr. Kriss said, and 12
presses will be used instead of the usual 6."

OK changed plates this year but it did not cost us anything. When we renewed they issued the new plates that have the supposed likeness of a native American shooting a bow. The guy does not look like any native who ever inhabited America. He looks more like a padded Ninja warrior.

"Periodic re-issuance of vehicle plates is important for overall highway safety, law enforcement and the general integrity of the vehicle registration system. The visibility of reflective vehicle plates decreases with time. The legibility and reflectivity of the current Empire plates, introduced in 2001, was only guaranteed for a maximum of five years. The current plates will have been in use for 10 or 11 years when they are replaced by the new Empire Gold plates. Vehicle plate re-issuance also helps to ensure compliance with motor vehicle registration and insurance requirements."

I have to register my vehicle every two years in November. I just renewed. I discovered that my registration fee went from $90 to $190, thank you very much, can I have another. That change took place in October. Gosh, if they had told me, I could have saved a few bucks by renewing early. Well, at least I didn't have to buy new hideous license plates. (That graphic designer should be fired.)
