A Kirbyville woman fought back against a hammer-wielding attacker early Wednesday morning, getting in two good hits with her cane before the man fled into nearby woods.
Kirbyville Police Chief Jeff Clopp said officers responded to a call of a woman screaming at Pecan Grove Apartments on the 500 block of West Levert just after 1:20 a.m. Wednesday.
When officers arrived on the scene, Clopp said, they found a disabled woman on the ground with a head injury.
The woman reported that a tall, thin black male dressed all in black with a ski mask and gloves was breaking windows in the apartment complex.
After he'd broken four apartments' windows, the woman attempted to stop him by hitting him on the head with her walking cane, Clopp said.
"It left a welt on his head, I'm sure," he said.
As the woman turned back to her apartment, the man struck the back of her head with the hammer, knocking her to the ground, Clopp said.
The man reared back to strike her again with the hammer, but the woman struck him once more with her cane, this time hitting his arm and causing him to yell "ouch" and drop the hammer, Clopp said.
The man fled into nearby woods where the Jasper County Police Department K-9 unit was able to track his scent for a mile before losing it in the parking lot of Weaver Brothers Motors.
Clopp said police collected DNA, the hammer and the cane used to strike the attacker and are sending the evidence to the Department of Public Safety crime lab in Houston for analysis.
Police are looking for any information that might lead to the man's arrest.
"I gotta catch this guy," Clopp said, noting that he and local police have been working non-stop to find the man since the initial incident at 1 a.m.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call EasTex Crime Stoppers at 409-724-TIPS.

A good cane is a fine, less lethal tool depending on the circumstances. In this case the woman might have been justified to shoot the guy, if she had a weapon.

What a gutsy old gal, can you imagine the difference a revolver would have made? Perhaps the BG would not have even made it to the woods.

She did what she had to with what was available. At the very minimum, she used an item we seldom would think of as a weapon.

Maybe folks can chip in and get her a new cane......one with a hidden sharp sword inside or better yet, a cane "gun".

    Hmmm......South East Texas.......Man with hood.

Call me crazy, but my spidy sense says this is one of the fine refugees from New Orleans that Houston was kind enough to take in after Katrina.

Never bring a hammer to a cane fight.

Clubbing someone over the head -- whether with a baseball bat or a cane or just a chunk of firewood -- is using lethal force.

There are deadly weapons everywhere... and some of them are firearms.

And sticking a cane between the legs of a fleeing BG causes a mighty crash. Though, she'd probably get in trouble for that because he was leaving.

What kind of barbarian attacks old ladies?

But she should have stayed safely inside and called 911 instead.

Good for her, she fought back and won.

Sword Cains are illegal in Texas, how ever a S&W 642 might work just fine.

Hope BG get cough jumping spiked top fence as another fellow who thought he was ninja did in a thread not long ago.
