All this crap is going on when there is an easy solution.
Send warning shots out before they get close and if they proceed then shoot.

Because that would make sense . . .

I don't know what the cost of a few M2s and a small selection of small arms, plus the cost of training crew to use them would be, but I imagine it'd be cheaper than paying 12 million in ransom . . . or losing the ship completely.

International Law. Port visits in countries where firearms are illegal. Territorial water where firearms are not legal. NGFS will solve the problem. Use the 5 inch!

I would think the shipping company would invest in training for the crews to be able to defend the ship, and the crew's lives.

IMO A 50 cal rifle and a few M79 to take out pirates or just put holes in their small boats and leave them to bail out water in the middle of the ocean would be good for long range. Up close, the crews would use AK47s or M4s and personal sidearms.

Someone should be able to make good money teaching ships crews how to defend their ship and their lives against pirates, and it would make the oceans safer.

Some of them are armed. Armed guards U.S. flagged Maersk Alabama (the same vessel that was involved in an incident earlier this year) recently fought off a pirate attack.

It is expensive to have armed guards on board. They have to be helo'd off when going through some countries territorial water and ports to a support ship. Most shipping companies don't want to inccur the expese, it is cheaper for them to just buy the insurance. There are very few US flagged merchant ships due do dodging taxes.

I also understand that the insurance companies have discouraged having armed escorts on-board any ship that they are insuring. They may be rethinking that now with pirating moving beyond Somalia.

Liability? Mutiny? Crewmen shooting each other? Hijacking aboard? Shooting officers and enemies? Stealing and selling the weapons?

Laws effect none of this...just ask the pirates.

All of this has been done before...a few hundred years ago.

Ransom, rape, plunder and pillage by the offenders with politicians arguing about how to deal with it. Insurance companies demanding that something be done. Its all been done before.

The solution back then is still the solution today. We have to take the fight to them, rather than them take it to us.

Until we hunt them down and kill them off until there are none left, it will continue.

    Put a bounty on them.

Blast them out of the water when encountered.
Find their bases and take them out.
Get a few SEAL teams after them and it'll be over by the end of the week.

    See how hard that was?

    Fixed.

Old laws of the sea. If the ship carries arms or has guns for protection ... it's not considered a transporting vessel or shipping vessel, and can be considered a legitimate military target or vessel. Many ports will not service any vessel that has any armament, except in special restricted areas. Several countries and the UN are reconsidering this and discussing changing the terms... to one that says if the ship is going to be traveling in pirated waters it can carry arms of certain types for protection.

I take it you have not heard about the Somalian Cruises ....... (humor)

The solution can be found in our past history.

We had to deal with piracy before. Where do you think the line, "to the shores of Tripoli" comes from in the Marine Hymn? It's time to get back to basics and start "taking care of business" instead of trying to "understand and dialogue" with our enemies.

This administration of course is to busy prostrating itself to do anything effective in regards to this matter.

Quite simply, most people in the (so-called) "civilized" world have such a strong anti-gun bias that they can't even conceive of defending themselves against an armed attack.

most vessels are carrying OIL,which is considered FLAMABLE,Due to insurance liabilities they can not have ANY firearms on board or the shipping company could loose insurance for it's entire fleet and not be able to get another insurer! Your talking BIG MONEY PROBLEMS! Not to mention international laws prohiting firearms in some ports....So there's your ans.
