    "Heat" the movie question

    Hey all,
So I was watching the movie "Heat" recently. The scene where they are robbing the armored car all of the guys with M-16s all have duct tape wrapped around the hand guards of their weapons, and I know I've seen similar things in other movies and TV shows.
What the hell is that for?
I also recall seeing pics of IDF Soldiers with these green and black bands in similar fashion on they're M16s. Is this used in the same purpose as the duct tape in "Heat"?

I think that was to attach whatever they were using as slings to the hand guards.

ETA: Also, I've seen some really sloppy hand guard to rifle fit, the tape may just be to keep them on.

I have no idea, i'm just throwing out a guess.... unregistard or stolen m16s? rip off the tape and toss the guns and there are no fingerprints to worry about?

I don't think you even need to rip off the tape. I don't know if it is a myth or not but I have seen a few movies where a someone pulls out a gun being used for a crime and it is wrapped in tape.

I think the cops here can tell you that few things hold a fingerprint better than the sticky side of duct tape... Casey Anthony down here will be done in by it...

    Bad plan... get some gloves.

During the armored car scene they're all wearing gloves, one-piece coveralls, and hockey masks. Afterward they torch everything (including the weapons) in the back of the stolen ambulance. I think JD is right, and fingerprints were not a concern.

In addition to the gun porn, you get Ashley Judd. Hot.

If you have never had Top or the company Gunnery Sgt. come and tell you to shoot off all the ammo before the end of the fiscal year you haven't lived!

IMO The duct tape is on there because the standard hand-guards single piece of aluminum "heat shield" gets really hot on select fire weapons.
During the armored car heist, McCauley (Robert De Niro) carries a Colt Model 654 carbine, a 14.5" barreled predecessor to the M4, with M16A1-style lightweight barrel and sights. Based on configuration it may be a 654 upper on a GAU-5A receiver (or possibly even an SP1 receiver with a drop-in autosear to allow it fire fully-automatic).
It appears it was just that 1 rifle w/duct tape.

He has the tape on an M-16 "shorty" converted to full auto. Note the lack of a forward assist on the upper.

Whoever the gun guy was on that set knew his stuff.
