Yes indeed. Happy Chanukah to all for whom the greeting is appropriate. I know from what many have posted here that there are a surprising number of Jewish people here. The best to all of us for the holiday.

So, do we start a new poll? You guys eat your latkes with apple sauce or sour cream?

What if there's meat on the table?

Yeah, I use sour cream too.

    Happy whatever to everyone.

Apple sauce is for wimps (just kidding ). Sour cream, and a good dollop of it.

For those of you that are wondering, "latkes" are potato pancakes, simmered in oil, and boy are they yummy, although cholestorol laden.

And yes, Happy Chanukah to all our Jewish members on the forum!

You make a very good point! Of course this won't work if there's meat on the table. I'm not kosher so it doesn't matter to me, but my friends who are observant will just have the latkes during a dairy meal. That way either apple sauce or sour cream works.

My mom used to grate the potatoes by hand, using one of those hand grinders. It makes a much better pancake than using a food processor. She would grate right down to her knuckles, and she used to kid that what made them so delicious was a little bit of blood from the grating!

I have seen Chanukah/Hanukkah/Hanuka/Hanukka spelled at least 19 different ways in my lifetime.

However exactly you prefer it spelled....Have A Happy!

Since it is not an English word, there is no concise way to Romanize the spelling or pronunciation. This is why it's spelled so many ways.

In modern Hebrew, the opening letter is a "chet" which is not pronounced like the "ch" in "child", but more like the "ch" in Bach, with a guttural, throat clearing sound.

The English spelling, therefore comes closest with "Chanukah", with that guttural "ch" sound, but since that is difficult for many native English speakers, the spelling and pronunciation have been changed sometimes to a more easy to say "Hanukah".

Hope that clears up some confusion!
