Runaway horses cause car crashes

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. - A group of runaway horses caused a series of car crashes in Isle of Wight county, sending three people to the hospital and killing seven horses.

State Police say about 20 horses got loose from a local farm.

One accident happened on Carrsville Highway, involving one horse and one vehicle. No one was injured in that crash.

There were two separate accidents on Beaverdam Road, each with one horse and one vehicle. In one of those crashes, a woman was transported to Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Va.

The fourth crash was on Carrsville Highway and involved four horses and a minivan. A man and a woman were in the minivan. The man was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and the woman to Southampton Memorial. Both suffered from non-life-threatening injuries, according to Virginia State Police. All four horses in that accident were killed.

As of 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, all of the other loose horses had been rounded up and brought back to the farm, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Cotten.

Waaaaaaaaaay back in the 1970's my brother hit a horse with his Chevy Malibu, outcome was one totaled car and one dead horse. Due to a horses' height they often come through the windshield and injure or kill people when hit.
