A couple of years ago I was travelling with sidearms and ammunition. The ammo was all in factory boxes. The TSA agent dutifully opened each box of ammo, removed one round, and swabbed it. Mind you, the ammo boxes were clearly marked ".45 ACP"... and all I could think was, what on earth did she think the chemical swab would reveal??? Well, nothing came back from the analyzer, but I still shake my head at that.
Smokeless powder is not an explosive. Insert some scientific explanation here about the pressure curve. Black powder is an explosive albeit not a good one by today’s standards. She was probably checking for that.
As to the OP I worked with these guys every day for five years and had many talks about this with them. I was always told gun powder is no big deal. I have since transferred and no longer deal with TSA every day.

Just don't get any or your exploded bomb on your shootin' iron and you'll be just fine.

Don't think so. I don't think they have a minimum IQ requirement either.

I think you give them too much credit. There's a reason that I haven't been on an airplane since 2004.
