Big Rock on TV and Movies

    I must be crazy but......

I have seen the same big rock (mountain) in quite a few movies and TV shows. Some of the movies go back 50 years. I have seen it on Star Trek TNG and most recently NCIS-South by Southwest. It seems that when ever a a desert scene is required this rock has to be in the scene.

    Description:
    Large gray mountain.
    Sedimentary rock.
Sticking out of the ground at about a 50 degree angle.
    Very sharp and weathered.

I just wondered where it was (back lot of a studio?) and if it had a name?

There are very few "scenic" areas that directors/producers can and/or want to use. There are parts of the southwest that most of us would find familiar in a heartbeat just from TV and movies.

    My favorite episode.
It is surely true that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Nor can you make them grateful for your efforts.

Same small town square from "Back to the Future", "My Cousin Vinny" and a few other movies.

Same old house in "Baby Boom" and a Chevy Chase movie about an urban couple moving to the country. What is that movie's name?????????
