    Last Minute Upgrade

As many of you know, we have had, at times, a performance "issue" with the server we are hosted on. As we grow, this will continue to happen, periodically. I'm sure I'm on a "Oh crap, he's calling again" list with the host, but, oh well. To avoid the problem being on our end, we have to apply new security patches and script upgrades as they are released.

There has been a security patch released which I just installed and while I had the forum off I performed some routine maintenence that needed to be done. Hopefully that will help improve performance.

There is also a substantial release in the vBulletin software, vBulletin version 3.6.0 that we need to do to that may also help resolve some of the performance problems we have been experiencing and give us some new features. Most of them are on the Administration/Moderator side, but some of them will also enhance the operation of the forum from our members' perspective. At least we hope they do.

Why am I boring you with all this? Because I have decided to make that upgrade this weekend. Sometime tonight, or tomorrow (depending on how quick I can get things ready) I will be taking the forum down for at least a couple of hours, maybe longer. If all does not go as expected it sometimes takes a while to get everything straightened out.

What I am worried the most about are the changes I made the last time I changed the design and color scheme. All that may come undone, so don't be surprised if you come back and don't recognize the place. I will be working to get it all back as quickly as possible if that happens.

Before I bring it all back up I will post a thread with the new features you can expect and play around with. See you on the flipside....

If you need some assistance banging/testing, I'd be happy to chip in. Send me an email, if so.

Thanks for the offer, Michael. Unfortunatley, we're all going to be forced to "bang/test" the result of this upgrade....

''Bang test'' - hmmm - any caliber restrictions?

Good luck with it anyways - always a bit stressful doing that. You have a faithful and understanding following tho Bumper - so any temporary upsets will be easily handled.

Okay, most everything is working. I posted a thread regarding new features you can play around with (I haven't tested them yet) and another on what I broke in the process. I will be working on getting those resolved tomorrow and probably throughout the week....

Quite a session you must have had - pretty stressful deal.

    Thanks for all your efforts.

I doubt it, we're on a shared server, which may be part of the problem. The host has checked and found no issues that they were willing to admit to.

Since upgrading last night our performance has been pretty good. On a normal day I would get between 150 and 800 database connection errors email to me. A couple of months ago, while researching the problem on vBulletin's site, I found the version requirements for both PHP and MySQL for the new vBulletin version (v3.6.0). MySQL was not at a late enough release for me to be able to install the upgrade. But yesterday when I looked again it was. I believe what happened is that the host upgraded to a later version of MySQL (and PHP, btw) without telling me and inadvertantly created an issue affecting our performance. I have not had one database error since 2:00 this morning. My fingers crossed that it will remain that way....
