    It's definitely 'slower'...

It's operating normallly today here in Colorado.

I talked to a phone Co guy today and he gave me the real answer:

I've had a couple of little glitches the last day or two, but on the whole, I'd say it's picked up speed.

Tuesday afternoon was bad... couldn't get on at all for a while, but once it was going again, it seemed fine.

There is a problem with the performance lately and it seems to get fixed for awhile and then start degrading again, in a cycle. Since I prepaid two years of hosting a few months ago, unless I upgrade our hosting "plan" I don't have a quick resolution to the problem. The forum has almost reached the size that I may need to get a dedicated server but that's not in the budget just yet. As raysheen said, as popularity grows so do the hosting issues. We do have the search bots crawling us all of the time which has only a minor impact on us because I have throttled them back rather dramatically a few months ago. We don't allow auto-registering. Our spammers register just like everyone else. They just don't last very long.

I'll call the hosting company's technical support and see if I can get some kind of solution or recommendation, but my experience tells me it won't be overnight....

Another thing that definitely has an effect is Christmas. Every Christmas we have slowed down dramatically, but this, so far, has been the worst. I expect that someone is co-located on the server with us that is having a heavy number of visitors this time of year.

Bumper, we get this too on the forums where I'm a MOD, most of the time it turns out to be the script kiddies home for the holidays or our Russian friends, I believe I sent you the copy of the Russian mass mailer I had to deal with.

There is another fix that was sent to me by a friend who is an admin I can share with you:
    http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=464628

It keeps new members from posting URL's for a certain number of days and post counts. Which is configurable in the CP.

My speed has picked up significantly and, as a bonus, the forum stopped generating so many access errors. I bet I haven't had 5 all week. Normally I get quite a few, on really slow days I get several hundred. You need to remember, just because the forum appears slow to you, doesn't mean it's on this end or your end. The problem can be anywhere along the way. I am fairly convinced that a lot of our problem, that always seems to happen most severely around the Christmas shopping season is caused by someone co-located on our server having a banner sales day. They were having a problem with the SQL server, though and that seems to have been fixed....

There's certainly that part of it, too. All the kids are home and seeing what chaos they can cause the rest of us. I'm not sure whether a similar script is available for vBulletin....

I am sorry. I posted a new thread about the data base errors I have been getting over the last week before I saw this thread.

You can delete it if you want. I think this thread cleared up all the questions I had.

Thanks for all the hard work Bumper.

No prob's Mike - as your new thread is for this very evening. It is useful to get feedback now and again to see if prob's are widespread or not.

Yup, no problem on the new thread, this is a different (although identical) incident as last month. It is helpful to see new threads in this area when there is a new problem. I meant to close out the other one....
