When this forum was just an idea, floating aimlessly around inside my head, I started trying to come up with a domain name. ConcealedCarry was, obviously, the checked, but it was already taken. After putting everything on hold and walking around with a notepad for a couple of days, I had a list of other potential domain name. They turned out to be all taken, as well. As I sat thinking about names, it occured to me that being involved in a defensive situation really is combat. Not military style combat, of course, but combat, nonetheless. After checking out CombatCarry.com, I found it to be available, of course. I let the name knock around inside my head for another couple of days and it when it started to have a "ring" to it, I registered the domain and installed the old XMB forum script.
We were, overnight, in business with a single member, me. That was okay, though, it gave me time to get the design down (gray text on a black background), the header graphics (complete with bullet holes) and content, well content that left alot to be desired compared to what we are today. A few people started to find us. We became a clearinghouse for jokes, pictures, political rants, social rants. If something moved that we didn't like, we would take a shot at it. All eight of us.
After awhile more people showed up and our personality was pretty much hammered in stone. We were becoming like a few of the other really bad forums, but we had developed a following. When I started to think about making some changes to focus us more on concealed carry topics, I came up with what I felt was a better domain name, DefensiveCarry.com. It was to the point of what I wanted the forum to be. It was available so I bought it. After telling everyone my idea, I pissed everyone off. Nobody liked it. They wanted "rough and tumble", and CombatCarry was better than DefensiveCarry, to them, so I left that domain parked. I did, however, start slowly moving the forum away from what we had become while trying to maintain the current membership.
We moved to a lighter design. They hated it. I had a friend do a new header graphic without bullet holes. They hated it. I reorganized the forum layout, removing the dirty jokes and aggressive threads and posts. They hated it. Every day brought a new change to the forum. They hated it. I started contacting some of the members that always seemed to post to the concealed carry threads and asked them to start posting more "on topic" threads. Soon, all those that hated the changes started leaving, but for every one that left, ten new members showed up. I made another push and removed all political forums, all joke forums and all of the rants. Someone posted a link to another (good) gun-related forum and we started growing by a couple of members a day. The old XMB forum script was having some security problems so I started looking for another forum script. I bought vBulletin, installed it and everyone loved it. The future was starting to look good for CombatCarry.
After considering the move to DefensiveCarry once again, I decided against it because we needed the traffic from the links people had started placing all over other forums so I let the idea sit. When I finally did bring it up again, everyone thought we already had a following and changing the name would confuse people. Everyone always agreed that the name was a better fit, but didn't want the change. So we stayed with CombatCarry.
Now, however, we have evolved into something quite different than we started out as. We are focused, for the most part, on our subject matter, our membership has topped 10,000 members and we have become pretty much the forum for concealed carry discussion. I am very pleased with our progress. We have a committed core membership and staff. We will continue to make changes that will make the forum a better place to visit. The recent move to our dedicated server is one of the big improvements. Recently adding additional administrators will help me stay on top of the work on the backend work.
But the move, although very smooth for such an undertaking, has created some configuration problems that need to be fixed. vBulletin has recommended, to resolve these problems, that I do a fresh install of the script, reinstall the links, the gallery and all of our plugins. To accomplish this, the forum would normally need to be taken down, off and on, for a period of a week or so and I would rather not do that. There is just too much that can go wrong.
As an alternative, we have, after discussing it in the staff area, decided that this may be the time to make the jump to the DefensiveCarry.com domain name. Doing this allows me to do a fresh install of vBulletin on that website (which has been done), bring over all of the design files (also done), the Links directory, the Gallery and get them all configured correctly and tested. Once all is working as intended, the forum will only have to be closed for 2-3 hours while data is moved. This domain would then be re-directed to the new site. It will look, operate and perform the same as it currently does, just under a different name. A name more focused on what we are and represent.

The name to me is secondary to the info, attitudes and enjoyment I derive from visiting with like minded folks. Do what you think is best Bumper, y'all are stuck with me either way.
Bumper, I do like things here (Combat Carry, it's nice here). A personal defense scenario where someone has to engage a BG is certainly a type of combat. But combat in this day and age has a certain connotation that goes with it. I think that Defensive carry does embody the ideas of the members here better, because we all want to defend ourselves, but we aren't really Rambo types. Also people always bring up "If I am in a defensive shooting and they get a search warrant for my computar and find lots of gun sites and forums ect..." and I suppose in that instance posting every day on defensivecarry.com could look better in the court of public opinion. Not that I don't like the combat carry name, but it does have a slightly more negative connotation. Just my $0.02, its your house, do whatever you think is best.

Bumper, sir. 6 months ago, I was drifting around trying to find a place where I could go to get info about concealed carry. I was tired of the sites that had a few very vocal idiots that no matter what the topic was, they would flame everything that was not their idea. I went to quite a few of them that, in my mind, had 12 year kiddies running the place. Most had very harsh political viewpoints, and if you didn't go with them, then you needed to go away. Some even advocated overthrow of the system we have in the US just because something they didn't like happened to them. Point is this. I really don't care what you call your site. If you call it man on the moon with a gun dot com, then I will support it. This is by far, the best site that I have found dealing with concealed carry and related subjects. As long as people are required to "wipe their feet" before they enter your site, I will be happy with "the pink and purple pistol packing people of america".
What ever name you and your staff happen to call it is secondary to making sure that we all have a place to go to in our spare time to learn, share, ask questions and make a few jokes. I find good subjects here, more than enough experience to answer all the questions, and people here are, for the most part, very friendly and able to get along with others very well. Can't do that on some of the sites I have visited.
Call it what you want, I will be here and support everyone here till the end. I love this place. Thank you for this tremendous site. David
A person is justified in the use of deadly force, if such person reasonably believes deadly force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to such person or a third person.
Bumper When it comes down to the " nutt cuttin " its your call . My question is why not have both names , structure one for ccw , and one for more general , cover more rifle and shotgun , copetitave shooting , tricked out custom guns , amature home smithing , ect.. The choice is of course yours , but to me defensive carry is more ccw related , and combat carry would set better as the all around fourm. Of course this pre supposes you could " draft " the fine mod team you now have to at least kick off the new forum . I for one would love to have a forum more geared to home smithing , them (as one pundant just put it to his own dismay ) "terrorist rifles " ect.. Names are pretty unimporntant to me I will be here till kicked out . Combat Carry has a name now , but at internet speed in 6 months we are right back where we are today ( or less with cross posts on other forums ) . Again Your , and to a lessor degree the mod team's choice , but i had to plug an idea.
Make sure you get full value out of today , Do something worthwhile, because what you do today will cost you one day off the rest of your life .

Make the jump. Call it what you will, the members and staff are what make the forum and as long as combatcarry.com will automatically link to the new name, we won't lose members.
I say go for it.
What ever you call it, as long as this site is still as informative and well moderated as it currently is, I will be here posting and learning no matter what the name.
This is with out a doubt the single best CCW related forum on the net and I love it here. It is my home page and I vist the site every single time I get on the internet.
Call it what you will. Defensive Carry is fine with me. Combat carry is fine with me. I will always be here.
I actually ALMOST didn't join because of the name. What I found was alot different than what I expected. Simply because of the name I expected lots of Rambo mall ninjas. I say the sooner, the better.
I will echo the above sentiments and fully agree that I prefer DefensiveCarry.com.
Not only is it prudent from a site management perspective and I appreciate that making all the hard work you do even a little easier is an intelligent move on your part, but also it does give the site, us as a community and gun owners/permit holders in general a far better public image than anything with 'combat' as a central part of it's identity.
I'm not embarrassed by the word combat, far from it, but I do realize that any individuals or groups opposed to our collective point of view can and will take something like that and use it to portray our cause as dangerous or comprised of unnecessary force.
We are a level headed, friendly bunch having civil conversations about serious matters. I can't imagine anyone leaving over a name change now, or anyone not joining in the future.
It's a very good idea and thanks for running it by us for our opinions.
Now if we could only rename one of the other gun forums (and I'm not saying which one) to clash-of-the-egos.com.
To defend your life you must engage in combat with the Bad Guy.
I'd say go for both names. Like Redneck said, we can expand to cover some other fields like sport shooting and gunsmithing.
About the only thing you need would be to redesign the Top Banner and some titles.

Ego will kill you. Leave it at home.
Defensive Carry is more politically correct than Combat Carry, but to me this place will always be Combat Carry.

DefCarry is good.
Whatever doesn't kill you postpones the inevitable.
In the end, the domain name is simply the way I find my way here each day. Of course, now that the community has grown, we might need to worry about the image a little more. The name CombatCarry could send the wrong message to the unenlightened (read: sheep). Like Geoff said, DefensiveCarry is more PC. Just my $.02 though. Call it what you will. It is the people I am here for.

I'll stick around regardless, but I prefer DefensiveCarry--It better matches the tone here.
