I'm a network/security engineer/consultant and have a full blown commercial internet connection and a server. I also own a fairly sophisticated IRC based chat software that's not doing a dang thing right now. I would be willing to host such a service, or if forum owners are interested in self-hosting I would be willing to transfer my license for this software to them. Many clients are available for it, from web-based java clients, to simple or sophisticated stand-alone clients.
You can read about the software here: OfficeIRC - IRC Server
The facts are indisputable. There is more data supporting the benefits of Conceal Carry than there is supporting global warming. If you choose ignorance, in light of all the evidence, in order to bolster your irrational fear of guns, you are a greater threat to society than any gun owner.

Really, I would rather not install a chat feature. Most forums that do, that I have heard of, regret it because it is hard to monitor, pretty much makes the rules difficult to enforce and is pretty intense on the server.

Also the forums you enter start talking about everything but what the chat is supposed to be about. I joined a science chat room one time and science was the last thing they where talking about. Plus if you want to chat, there is that spot on your public profile with your IM name, thats the way I do it anyways, this way its 1 on 1, or you can use Yahoo IM and have as many people join in on the chat as you want

Bumper has spoken - but I'll add too - NO ... not needed IMO for this place.
Main thing is - plenty of chat options around outside of DefCarry - and so I'd suggest any folks itchin to hook up that way go to PM and exchange ID's etc for their fave chat prog' and a hook up.
