Whenever I have to work at night I spend most of my time on DC and it wouldn't work last night. Do you know how horrible it was to have to actually work!

I was doing software installation/maintenance last night and thought the problem was with my computer.

Not happy it was DOS, but glad it wasn't my machine.

For those of us who aren't 'hackers'...How does an attack take place?

They use a client to bombard us with an extremely large number of hits for period of time and the server becomes so overwhelmed it cannot respond. It's like several hundred thousand people trying to get on the forum all at once....

A DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack occurs when an individual or organization uses a worm, trojan, or virus to create a "slave farm" of computers. These hundreds, or thousands, of PCs could be pretty much anywhere - your grandmother's house, the office, at school - and the owners would not know they had been compromised. When the hacker picks a target and initiates the attack, all of the machines they now control that are turned on and connected to the internet flood the target server with requests, overloading it and sometimes causing the server's link to the internet to fail.

Basically, think of it as one guy taking remote control of all the cars in VA, and cramming them onto I-95 northbound into DC.

I do get more work done when this site is down. I have noticed a direct correlation.

Are you saying you suspect your employer? That would provide a clear motive...
