Changes to Member Buy, Sell, Trade Forum

We have had a number of members posting to the Member Buy, Sell, Trade forum that do not participate otherwise in the forum. These threads are generally not successful because the person has no "history" with the forum. We have also had an increasing number of spam threads posted

To remedy this, we have made a change that requires a member to have made over 25 posts before being allowed to start a thread in the Member Buy, Sell, Trade area.

We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but believe it is more important that we resolve the problem for our membership, in general.

A copy of this thread has been placed in the Member Buy, Sell, Trade forum.

I think that's a good idea personally.

I think it's a good idea personally.
I have mixed feelings...some of the people on this forum I feel like I know fairly well, and some I don't. So I figure I would base it on what I know of the person, and I would probably do a search to find out what they had posted before.

If all they had posted was 25 "Welcomes" in the New Member area, I probably still wouldn't send them my money....Same thing goes for 200 posts.

I also worry about people posting nonsense, just to reach the '25' posts. I guess it will prevent the Spam guys from posting, and I would guess that the membership to this forum is smart enough to discern the difference between an actual member and somebody who is trying to reach the 'pre-requisite' number of posts.

Anyway, to steal a line from Retsup; Stay diligent, stay alert, stay armed...

:c-yes4: Glad ya did it, hopefully it will get people more involved!

I think it's a good idea. Most of the newcomers dive in feet first and get addicted (takes one to be able to spot the symptoms....), thereby establishing themselves within the Forum community. I think Kerbouchard's comment about "junk" posts just to reach the 25-post minimum is a valid concern. I guess the way to spot that behavior is for a) a mod to monitor prior posts of someone listing in the MBST Forum for BS, and/or b) other members doing the monitoring. Some may fall through the cracks, but most will get caught. Either way, it's a lot of work for somebody who otherwise probably has a lot of other irons in the fire.

I've noticed a number of ads lately by people with 18-60 posts total. Some of these folks have been registered for a number of years. In these cases, I pass on whatever they are offering, as I consider them an "unknown quantity".

BTW: I am registered on a number of forums where I've only posted from 0 to a handful of times. I would expect others to treat me the same way unless they knew me from some other place.

I think this was a good move!

I understand the concerns about people that might post 25 welcomes and then start listing, but most, it seems, just post their ad and go on their way. If they have to post 25 posts, even welcomes, I doubt that many will go to the effort. It's still a case of buyer beware, but most of the problem seems to people here for one reason. Spammers won't go to the trouble.

Another change made was that threads/posts made in that area do not increment the post counter so if you see someone with exactly 25 posts you may want to be particularly suspicious..... :yup:

... requires a member to have made over 25 posts before being allowed to start a thread in the Member Buy, Sell, Trade area.
Very good step. That "history" is essential to helping gauge the intent of the parties. Without it, the risk goes up substantially.

Kudos!

Unfair rules

I think your rule of 25 posts before one can offer to sell something is ludicrous! I have posted a for sale item on 04/20/08 without this rule imposed. I went into the forum to repost a WTB item and was confronted with this "NEW" rule. New to me. I have read this forum for some time and have enjoyed the different threads and information. As well I have learned alot from the members posts. This inablilty to now post without having 25 posts to other sites seems unfair; and I am not sure I want to continue if this remains to be your atttitude. I would think you would welcome new members instead of trying to run them away.

View from the peanut gallery, having helped manage other forums previously ...

It's hard to distinguish between spammers/scammers and legitimate folks, without some method. A number of web forums do this, though not all. Everyone benefits in this way, in that having been around awhile gives folks a gauge of your intent and respectability, lacking another reasonable metric. It's no guarantee, but it helps.

withdraw my name!!

Well I am sorry for the stance you have taken on this. It seems "birds of a feather" flock together. I really don't understand your reasons nor do I respect them. I am a 66 year old man, married, veteran, retired, volunteer in my community: and with a son in the Marine Corp. I stated my intent when I joined this forum. I am,obviously, not of like mindedness, with this forum. I request you remove my posts and me from this forum.

Well, there you go. In simple terms, that's the distinction. Respect. There's a lesson there, for those who see it. One could easily say that it's a primary reason most are here.

I, for one, respect your decision to leave. Would preferr to have you, but not if you're unhappy and don't find a "fit." :hand36:

Didn't understand posting criteria

I may have gotten upset as I didn't understand why I was allowed to post on the buy, sell, trade on 04/20/08; but then refused to post on 04/25/08. I can understand your wanting to protect this forum from spammers(thought I don't know what those are?). But my nose got bent out of shape by the forum's moderators inconsistency and applying a rule after the fact. Oh well, live and learn.

You don't know what a spammer is?
This is a Spammer. They join the forum and usually post one or more of these as their first post. See Below.

someone missed the boat

Somewhere, somehow it seems i may have pissed someone off?? When I make what I think is a serious reply, you guys pick put what you want to respond to and lambast away!I had enough of this kind of thinking when I was in the workplace. And really don't feel up to playing silly little games. Naively, I thought I might get a meaningfull, logical answer here. I guess i have been mistaken. Well not again!! You guys have fun playing with each other. I'm outta of here.

Sorry JD, I think you are being too harsh on this gentleman. He isn't coming across as a "wiseguy" but someone who isn't computer savvy and doesn't understand what "spam" is or why there is a need to protect members from "hit 'n run" advertisers.

-------------------

Proudmarinesdad, let me give a shot at answering your questions. [Disclaimer: I am just a "member" here just like you. I have no role in running this fine site, but I do have 2+ years experience on another forum where I was deeply involved with managing that forum as it grew from nothing to a very busy regional site.]

- Your first post (ad) was placed prior the new rule being implement. That's why you could post the first ad and your second ad got "caught" by the new rule (which is automated and would catch anyone who tried to post an ad with fewer prior posts).

- In managing a forum, there have to be rules in place and applied in an even-handed manner or chaos rules. This is a very family friendly forum that is extremely well run (best that I've ever encountered on the Internet) and it is because those that manage it post reasonable rules and apply them fairly.

- "Spammers" are those that post ads for obscene stuff, drugs (many of which are probably counterfeit), goods at totally unreal prices (stolen, counterfeit, or just to rip off your credit card/identity), etc. Some also use the term to describe those that use a forum ONLY to post "for sale" ads and don't contribute anything else to the forum.

- A little history based on some other forums I've been on for many years:

* Someone allegedly advertised a mag refinishing business, allegedly took in an estimated $50K and a ton of mags from members and then allegedly vanished!

* Some new folks posted cell phones for sale on a SprintPCS forum, took the money and never delivered the goods. It happened enough that they implemented a minimum number of posts and minimum number of months on that forum before anyone can post an ad.

- Thus some of us who have been around the Internet for a while check a poster's history before deciding whether to do business with him/her or not. I've seen a number of ads lately (here and on GlockTalk) posted by people with no more than 60 posts (some of these folks were registered for a few years). I won't consider doing business with such folks unless I know them from somewhere else. I'm just not going to risk sending money to what I consider an "unknown person". There are some forums where I've been registered for years and yet I've posted anywhere from ZERO to maybe 6-7 times over that time. I wouldn't expect anyone to trust me there either unless they knew me from somewhere else.

- As DC has grown, Bumper has decided to take some steps to protect ALL of us here from getting ripped off. That is the sole reason for the rule. It wasn't meant as an offense to you or anyone else. That is the manner in which you should take this . . . if you knew some of the nasty stuff that occurs on the Internet, you'd have a better appreciation for this, in the meantime you'll just have to trust folks . . . that they are looking out for their members in the most responsible way that is practical.

Please give this some thought and reconsider sticking around?

LenS, please don't jump to conclusions. There have been other issues with this fellow that led to his departure from the forum.

#34 · (Edited)
Sorry if I did jump to conclusion. He just came across to me as a computer newbie that was confused. I was only considering his posts in this thread.
Good idea. His words were telling:
But my nose got bent out of shape by the forum's moderators inconsistency and applying a rule after the fact. Oh well, live and learn.
Hm.

Reality: decisions are always made "after the fact." It's the nature of response to conditions.

The decision that was made was also consistently applied to everyone. Any decision has an implementation date. This one was no different. Yet, disrespect of the decision was the residue.

His final comment seemed to suggest he'd made peace with himself and accepted the simple reality that no splatter was aimed at him personally.

But then, he indicated not knowing/appreciating what a "spammer" was, got a reply from QKShooter, then got bent again about the reply, somehow suggesting that folks were twitting him in the nose, at his expense:

Somewhere, somehow it seems i may have pissed someone off?? When I make what I think is a serious reply, you guys pick put what you want to respond to and lambast away!

I had enough of this kind of thinking when I was in the workplace. And really don't feel up to playing silly little games.
Can't see where this flaming thing dumped on him is, but he seemed to think himself wronged, yet again.

His earlier request was to leave, due to being so unhappy:
... I am not sure I want to continue if this remains to be your atttitude. I would think you would welcome new members instead of trying to run them away.
And his final request was patently clear, replete with a parting jab:
Naively, I thought I might get a meaningfull, logical answer here. I guess i have been mistaken. Well not again!!
You guys have fun playing with each other. I'm outta of here.
Two specific statements of unhappiness here and a desire to leave ... well, helping him do just that doesn't seem an unreasonable step. He couldn't be happy. Some can't. Perhaps he can, elsewhere. But such a disjoint pissed-off nature that doesn't match the situation is where road rage and other anti-social leanings come from. That sort of thing has no place in public. It's certainly runs counter to the basic tenor of folks, here.

A couple of things are clear.

It's good to remember this simple rule of thumb to living a modern life: Always put the seat down, take your time. Everyone's happier, and there's less to clean up.

It's also something to note that most learn this at 5yrs old. Some apparently never learn. Such is life.

JD performed the correct moderation for this reason alone.

The member - or now EX-Member made the request.

"I request you remove my posts and me from this forum."

When a member asks to be shown the door - they get shown the door.

We don't want anybody here that does not want to be here.

#35 ·
While this may seem harsh, there seemed to be ongoing issues with a "chip" on his shoulder. While we prefer to work with new members, letting them get settled in to the routine here sometimes, no matter what you say, it is for naught. Some just seem to make up their minds and come hell and high water they are going to do what they are going to do.

We do have a policy here, of my own doing, that when someone says, basically, "I quit", they are gone immediately. On those occasions where we haven't caught it quick enough or we've made exceptions, it has come around to bite us. Deleting posts, using PMs to attack those that have "done them wrong" and anything else that makes them feel better seems to be the M.O.

All that being said, I cannot figure out why, in this case, that requiring 25 posts was such a big deal. I am at a complete loss.

ccw9mm summed up the situation pretty well as I see it....
