Makes me wish an IQ test was required

I'm not entirely serious about wanting a required IQ test to carry.... but this dude should maybe have to take one.

Please call me out if I over reacted.

My girlfriend and I were sitting at a coffee shop last night in downtown Glendale that surprisingly allowed open carry (we don't get much of that in downtown Phoenix).

Along with myself, there was one other gentleman OCing that night. This guy was sitting with a group of friends and talking about his new Glock, the firearm he was OCing.

Well... I'm sitting there making retarded faces at my girlfriend between sips of my espresso, when I look over and notice that this gentleman's firearm is in the hands of one of his friends. Unholstered. Slide in firing position. I watched this guy wave the Glock around like a moron until he pulled the action back (a slight relief) and handed the firearm to its owner.

To say the least I was pissed! I approached the gentlemen and politely asked, "How long have you been carrying for?" A couple weeks. "Congrads. Welcome to the club. Please, let me give you a quick pointer... When you are in a public place, that firearm should never leave your holster unless, God forbid, you are forced to defend yourself. For all I know, you have no idea how to properly clear a weapon and you're putting all of us (there were at least 10 people sitting outside) at risk by waving that thing around."

He replied with some rather choice words and the girlfriend and I quickly left.

Watch your own back all of the time. There will always be people greater and lesser of you. An IQ test really has nothing to do with it, and CC is just like driving the highway...............you'll see a lot of what you don't like in others, and at times, you may feel they threaten your very existence on this earth. Granted...there's no cure for dumbness. You'll just need to go on in life with the understanding that those types of folks are out there. I know how disturbing this realization can be sometimes.

Maybe not an IQ test but a common sense test. Sounds like a guy that carries to be cool and would have no idea what to do if he actually needed to use it. I would have left too, no point in waiting around to see what happens next. Unfortunately these people do give all of us a bad reputation but luckily I think they are few in number.

Almost sounds like he went beyond legal OC to illegal, pulling a weapon in public like that.

Wouldn't that be considered "brandishing a weapon in public" under the law?

Technically, brandishing involves handling (or in some states presenting) a weapon in a "threatening manner," not merely handling it. Then again, how's that saying go? "You can't fix stupid"?

Well I would have felt threatened. Maybe if the OP had pointed out to him that he was committing a crime the correction would have been better received.

It's stuff like that causes me to NOT support CCW/open carry without minimal training. It's a serious responsibility, and it isn't for everyone.
