Local sheriff recommends wasting resources watching OCers....

    From the article.
It’s just to be on the safe side and to observe the person,” said Sgt. Mike Bagladi, who heads the sheriff’s Hudsonville unit. “Will we in any way threaten or intimidate them? Absolutely not. They have the right to carry in a public place.
It seems to me that the PD is taking a pro active stance with OC. They are training the city workers about the legalities of OC and what to do. At least that is what I am getting from the story you referenced.....

    From the article:

"In a memo to the City Commission, City Manager Patrick Waterman wrote that “the likelihood of this happening is high given that many 2nd Amendment promoters are currently ‘testing the waters’ in many public buildings, looking for an opportunity to file a lawsuit.” For example, Grand Rapids Police are being sued for how they responded to a caller’s concern about a man who legally open-carried on the street while talking and singing to himself."

I find it ironic that these city officials are complaining about people legally open carrying a firearm just so they can file a lawsuit when they are harassed by local LEO, and their response is to have city employees contact local LEO to "observe" these people (putting the LEO in a position of "I had to contact this person to make sure he was sane, not a felon, gun not stolen, etc").

How about training city employees (especially LEO) on what the law is and how to not discriminate against people who are legally going about their business. Don't want a lawsuit? Don't violate someone's rights. Do they call the cops every time someone walks in to the library wearing a cross or a Bush Sucks t-shirt? Exactly.

Why do all of these guys in these videos sound like such whine bags?

I mean, I agree he was within his rights, and should not have been treated like that, but they all sound like such sniveling little dweeds, and none of them will shut and play it cool.

It would so refreshing to see or hear at least one who didn't sound like a mamas boy and armchair attorney.

The Sheriff wants people to call if they see someone enter a public building armed?

My advice is to cooperate, play the Sheriff's game. Put the Sheriff's Office on speed dial, call them up in the morning and say, "Hey guys, I heard somewhere that you want people to call if they see someone with a gun going into a public building, is that right? Umhmm...okay. This is John Public, I should be at ______ sometime around 2pm today. I'll be armed and wearing a white shirt and blue jeans. I just wanted you to know so that you can schedule your deputies appropriately if needed. I don't want them to be rushed."
The next day, call again and tell them where you hope to be. Call from where you are, call to let them know where you're going. Above all, BE COOPERATIVE, you're trying to do what they want, not prevent them from acting.

    Does it work? Hello yes.
I had a Deputy tell me that every time they got a call they were going to respond and 'check me out'. I just asked if he was working the next day and could I pencil him in for around 3 o'clock. He posted on another forum that they "know who he is, we have a description, we know his car. We don't go and play his games." .... Gee, I'm being left alone, what a horror.

I get really annoyed when people in positions of leadership advocate error on one side or another. Play it straight and legal and don't rely on erroneous judgement and we're all better off.

Error wisely, my friends, errr, uhmmm, be cool, I mean.

Again, I will say these ipeople draw attention to themselves and have their videos portray what they want. They start taping or recording things after the fact. A person can OC aorund here and nothing happens unless they make a scene first. I had lunch yesterday with a couple of the high ups in law enforcement. We ate in peace while OCing and not one person even batted an eye even though the officers were in plain clothes and wearing street clothes. If a person acts normally, the police will not bother an OCer.

Now if the carrier has an attitude beforehand, then expect the officer to get an attitude. I compare it to a person drag racing on the streets. It will bring the police in a hurry. Drive normally and you will not be bothered. Certainly there are cities where OC is seldom seen but here, there may be 5,000 people OCing on any given day and the police only becomes concerned when the carrier begins to act stupid. Last night a friend came over and he had a come to Jesus meeting with two officers months ago. It was days after the Co theater shooting. He had long hair, a scraggly beard and wearing clothes I would not have worn in public. Add to that, he carried a gun in a western holster not made for that gun and went into a theater. An officer was alerted by theater employees and the officer asked him to take the gun to his car. The guy got in the officers face telling him what the laws are. It ended with him being escorted to his car where the gun was left. His appearance, the way the gun was carried, his being armed where firearms were forbidden, public attention to the gun, emotions over the CO shooting and his attitude all meant he was inviting trouble. Now he understands that and we discussed it last night. He sees that he brought it on himself. He still carries openly but does it more discreetly and dresses better so as not to bring attention to himself. Not once in the over year since has he had a problem and not once has he been confronted by police since.

I will open carry today as I go to a shoping center, a wrecking yard, a clothing store, a grocery store and a office supply store (Office Depot). I will not be bothered by any LEO. Just as it is often not the way one says something but the way they say it that gets them in trouble with their spouse, it is the same with OCing. It is not the carry that causes problems but the way it is done and the attitude of the carrier.
