TN Senate votes for open gun carry without permit

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The state Senate has passed a bill to allow Tennesseans to openly carry guns without a state-issued permit.

The chamber voted 25-2 in favor of the bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Mae Beavers of Mt. Juliet.

Beavers said the measure would keep the background checks and training requirements in order to carry concealed firearms, but would allow anyone legally allowed to own a gun to carry it openly.

The bill would also remove state restrictions on the location of ammunition when firearms are being transported in vehicles, and would allow guns to be removed from cars on school property for the purposes of moving storing them in another part of the vehicle.

The companion bill is awaiting a vote in the budget subcommittee of the House Finance Committee.

More good news for TN. I moved here to TN mainly for the gun laws. Coming from Cali you can imagine how happy I am to be living here. Living like a felon for years out there got old.

Indeed good news, but since all my permits are valid in TN I usually OC when I am there anyway.

If this passes I may never conceal carry again!

"Why don't you just cover that up?"

    "Because that's illegal!"

I don't know how I personally feel about OC yet but I hope this bill passes. Anything that gives us greater freedom is good.

I agree that less government and less taxes tend to empower individual citizens, but it doesn't really "give" freedom - TN just tempers the tyranny that most states perpetuate.
Next step: remove restrictions on school carry.

We have none in Alabama. OC isn't something I see a point in doing, but defend your right to do so.

This has only passed the Senate. It still has to pass the House and be signed.

We'll see if this actually becomes law. It should but that doesn't mean it will. One thing my state never fails to do is surprise me where law is concerned.

I can say this, as I get older, the fact that I have to pay the state to exercise a RIGHT, one that happens to be enumerated in the US Constitution, just bugs the hell out of me.

How about we do away with any states permit for any gun?? Or regulation thereof. May as well repeal the Federal ones too while we are at it.

by the way, Louisiana is Open Carry without a permit. La Open Carry Awareness League exists to inform the citizens about this right and to help guide them in how to safely and legally carry in the bayou state.
