Bad encounter of OC, Weird reaction of an Open Carry person

Last year we were at a camping resort in Tenn. We were at the pool. We are from a CC only state (Texas ) A young guy in long pants, shoes, shirt is strolling around the pool area. I notice he has a side arm in a holster on his right hip. I'm thinking to my self is this guy a LEO or is open carry legal in Tenn. I was trying to see if he had a badge near the holster, and as any gun owner would do I was trying to check out his rig (gun and holster you perverts). He sees me, ( I'm about 10 feet away, just starring I guess) stops, turns to me and in a very disgusted voice says "Don't even think about it man". I was surprised and insulted by his reaction. He kept on walking and I didn't want to add fuel to his over reaction so I kept about my business of being on vacation.

I know he must have thought I was about to pounce on him, knock him down and grab his weapon. Me in my swimming trunks lounging around a pool just waiting for some OC sucker to come to the pool.

My point is both sides of an encounter can over react. That is not the way to win friends for OC. The OC person could have had a whole different approach if he was actually concerned, which I believe he WAS NOT.

Maybe he thought you were getting ready to hit on him. Unless you're a mind reader it's hard to say what was firing his neurons.

It is strange how some folks react to someone observing them closely.

It would appear that his SA went thru the roof when he saw you eye balling his gun. His was not the best way to handle it, but stuff happens. Glad nothing more happened....

Maybe he though you were checking out his lower regions in a sexual manner ?

This is not a question of OC vs. CC, it is a question of attitude while carrying. The young man you described has demonstrated that he does not possess the maturity or mental disposition to carry a firearm.

While I support his constitutional right to do so, this is a person who is most likely a mistake waiting to happen.

Please don't take this the wrong way , but if your traveling it is your responsibilty to understand the laws about the state you are going to . If you would have checked you would have known OC is legal in TN and you would not been checking him out so much .

He understood what he was able to do and felt uncomfortable with you giving him the " Stink Eye "
He did over react IMO .

Attitude is everything. If I see a gun, I'll eyeball it too. I'm a curious person.

That is kinda like someone with a face and neck full of piercings and tattoos getting upset because you are looking at him. If you do something to draw attention to yourself, expect people to look. That being said, I do think he over reacted, and I do support open carry.

Why didn't you just 'fess up and say you noticed his pistol and wondered what it was?

I was just casually looking. I had sun glasses on. I was not threating, Jeez I was on vacation. What the ----- difference does it make whether I know what the carry laws in each state are-if I am not toting. Now it's my fault? Come on, I'm at the pool, in swimming trunks ( which he was not), with kids, just happened to glance his way and did not look away fast enough for him I guess.

If I was up on him that is a different story. NOT MY FAULT

I have had a few that focused on my sidearm. It does not bother me at all. Maybe they want one like it.

More people stared at my grandmother's artificial leg, particularly kids. She got used to it and did not get upset.

The guy over reacted but then my mother told me it was impolite to stare. I still do it when I see a well built lady. Often I will take a photo of the lady. Of course, I have also taken photos of a lovely lady OCing.

Simple case of testosterone poisoning. Common among younger folks (of either gender). Hopefully the kid figures it out before he gets into a stupid needless confrontation.

You did nothing wrong, only an idiot would get hostile over that (unless it was a pool known for gay hookups - not likely with your family).
