    Open carry in Michigan?

Here in Michigan we are what is called an "open carry state"...from what little i've learned of that, it means i can carry on my hip in full view if i so chose. there's little to no info about open carry.

my question is WHERE this is allowed. is open carry allowed in all the same places that concealed carry is allowed with a permit?

and the other question i have is that if i'm legally carrying my concealed handgun say inside the waistband at the small of my back and my sweater rides up without my knowledge and someone starts screaming bloody hell about my having a gun...what would be the ramifications? open carry being legal and all...

WV is also technically an open carry state as well but few do it. If you can legally conceal it is just a better idea most generally. By the way Close family in Milford/Brighton area.

I recommend you check out Michigan - Stories From The States to help you with questions on open carry in Michigan.

This site is great and you can gain a wealth of knowledge, but is dedicated to concealed carry.

Mass is also an "open" carry state, for real. I chose to keep my LTC by not freaking out the local Lib. population. Where is it allowed? Deep in the woods.

Sounds about like MI . Even though it may be legal in MI , it isn't considered acceptable by the general population. As for accidentally exposing your gun, read up on MI CCW laws.

If you really think that, I suggest you check out OCDO's forums, and check out all the open carry stories in Michigan alone. There are a LOT more people open carrying in Michigan now. And I'm talking downtown Lansing, East Lansing, and other urban areas as well.

FYI, in MI law, even if you conceal it, you can print, or uncover it or anything. It's not illegal in this state.

DerbyGirl, have you checked out Michigan Gun Owners? There is an Open Carry forum there that I think that you may find useful. BTW, welcome to the forum here!

    Off Limits

    Go to Handgunlaw.us

Click on the "US Off Limits A-M" link on the left side. It will give you a .pdf file of all the places that weapons(concealed or not) are of limits in all states.

For MI it states that the following places are off limits:

1.*Schools or school property but may carry in the while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up if a parent or legal guardian. (Act 719 allows carry in parking lots. See below)

    2. Public or private day care center, public or private child caring agency, or public or private child placing agency.

    3. Sports arena or stadium

    4. A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises

    5. Any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship, unless the presiding official allows concealed weapons

    6. An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more

    7. A hospital

    8. A dormitory or classroom of a communitycollege, college, or university

    9. A Casino

10.Premises does not include parking areas of the above places

Administrative Order 2001*1 of the Michigan Supreme Court:
"Weapons are not permitted in any courtroom, office, or other space used for officialcourt business or by judicial employees unless the chief judge or other person designated by the chief judge has given prior approval consistent with the courtís written policy."

    28.425c Sec. 5c.

    (2) Subject to section 5o and except as otherwise provided by law, a license to carry a concealed pistol issued by the county concealed weapon licensing board authorizes the licensee to do all of the following: (a) Carry a pistol concealed on or about his or her person anywhere in this state. (b) Carry a pistol in a vehicle, whether concealed or not concealed, anywhere in this state.

MSP website: Does my valid Concealed Pistol License allow me to carry a concealed pistol in a state park? Yes. MCL 324.504 states that the DNR cannot promulgate or enforce a rule that prohibits a CCW holder from carrying on property under the control of the DNR.

Michigan State University, University of Michigan, and Wayne State University Buildings and Campus are off limits to those even with a Permit to Carry. All other colleges etc the only place off limits are the Classrooms and Dormitories.

Why the difference on those three universities? Those colleges are quite large, and cover many acres. Public roads come through them, and it was my understanding that you can carry on campus, just not in classrooms or dorms. Some people live close and their normal driving routine takes them through campus.

I can't say much about the other universities, but I contacted MSU's public safety department and asked them "what if" I was passing through on one of the many roads that go through. I was told, as long as my destination is not on MSU grounds, I'd be fine. IF however, I intended to stop and spend any time on MSU, then I needed to first check my UNLOADED firearm at their station.

Anyway, that's what they told me.

Makes sense. Pretty sure the same thing applies down here in Kazoo with Western. My GF lives in Lansing and driving around and such, just wanted to be sure I was okay.

It has something to do with those specific state universities, being, land grant universities, I think. So don't quote me, I might be wrong.

I know there are some who are looking into their ability to write their own rules on carry and trying to see if it can be over turned. But I wouldn't hold my breath. I think it will take a while for any real changes.
