    Open Carry in Scranton, Today

this month is Autism Awareness Month. because of this, many organizations across the country chose this weekend to hold events. here in Scranton, the PLCTA, with help from other organizations, held their annual Autism Walk in Nay Aug Park.

you may ask yourself, what's it like being surrounded by a few hundred people and their autistic family members? well, a lot of handclapping and rocking, for one thing. seriously, though, it's nice to be able to walk around with my oldest girl, and not have to deal with people staring like jackasses when she screams without warning and bites herself. mostly because, there are a hundred or so other people doing it, too, but mostly, it's a normal part of life with an autistic child.

i had originally planned to conceal for the day, mostly due to my wife's feelings on open carry. well, her feelings on carrying, period. she was participating in the walk, so it was kind of her day; i just wanted to be the supportive husband type. after awhile, though, i thought maybe with all the activities going on, and the crowds, what are the odds a lot of people would notice? so, while my wife did the walk, i tucked my shirt behind the butt of my gun, and walked around a bit.

the only dirty looks i noticed were from Mike Washo and Corey O'Brien, two of the Lackawanna County Commissioners. awhile back, i spoke to them at a Commissioner's meeting, to alert them to the preemption violation in McDade Park, a situation that still hasn't been resolved. O'Brien gave me the stink eye, while Washo simply shook his head, and turned tail.

there were a few looks from people; i'm not sure they were dirty or disapproving looks. i think most were just thinking "HUH?" or wondered if the gun was, in fact, real.

one older gentleman approached me, pointing at my gun. i steadied myself for an argument, but he only said, "that a Colt you got there?"

whew. "no, sir, it's a Taurus."

    "never heard of 'em."

    "they're outta Brazil."

"huh. looks like a Colt. we used to use them in the service."

"yeah. my dad did, too. he loves them."

"they're good guns. well, take it easy."

later on, i ran into an old friend, a guy i used to work with. he surprised me by showing me his LTCF, and the Bersa in his pocket. last i talked to him, guns were bad, and he thought i was crazy for carrying one. i guess having a guy stalk your wife will do things to you.

the funniest thing about the whole day, is that my wife never noticed. either she's so used to me carrying that it's become invisible, or she chooses to tune it out.

it was a pretty good day, with face painting, moon bouncers, and raffles.

i'll end this post with this thought: 1 in 150 children being born have autism. two of them are mine.

My prayers are with your family. Keep up the good work!

So, was your Taurus the PT1911 that the gentleman mistook for a Colt?

You sound like a great dad...supporting your daughter and her challenges.
Glad the OC walk was uneventful.

I too as a teacher have to say good job dad! I have an autistic student right now who wants to be a technician and he is plenty smart enough too just the little things that others gape at instead of noticing the genius that I and his parents can see.... sad how people judge! I just hope we can find a shop that will give him a chance...
