I tested Montana's New OC Law Today.

It wasn't much of a test, really.

I left the house this afternoon to pick up my wife from work, carrying concealed under my denim vest. By the time I got to her office, it was a lot warmer than I had first thought, so I shed the vest and went OC.

On the way home, we stopped at Wendy's for carry-out. When we entered, there were 4 or 5 occupied tables, a few people glanced my way, but nobody registered any obvious alarm. We got in line, and a tourist couple (they're so easy to spot) with 2 kids got in line behind us. The man & woman glanced at me with a bit of apprehension, but neither said anything. The kids didn't notice, no "Daddy, he's got a gun!"

After we placed our order, we stepped aside to allow the tourists to get to the counter, that's when the woman flashed me a nervous little smile, but she still didn't say anything. I could tell she was trying really, really hard not to look at my holstered Commander. I returned her smile and moved over to wait for our order, which came quickly, and then we left. End of story.

    Pretty anti-climatic, all in all.

The Wendy's staff were too busy to notice a man with a gun. Well, maybe our order taker noticed, she rang up my senior discount without my having to ask for it.

Seems like I'm gonna have to break down and do my duty one of these days and OC if for no other reason than because I still can!

It's always nice to have the option of either CC or OC.

In my experience, those who notice don't care or are too afraid to ask why I have a gun on me. I have open carried in many fast food establishments and only had one comment, which a female customer thought my Glock 17 was a taser. Her eyes grew wide when I told her it was a handgun and not a taser, but she did not panic. There was another time I open carried at Taco Bell and saw some young thuggish looking kids sitting in a booth throwing food around and being loud. One of them pointed in my direction, and said something to his buddies. They got up and left in a hurry.

I still carry concealed most of the time though just because I am used to it.

You may be like me in that you look more like someones grandpa than a dangerous man with a gun.

What is new about the law? Hasn't open carry always been lawful in Montana?

I like the option of being able to CC or OC
Turn the election's in 2014 to a "2A Revolution". It will serve as a 1994 refresher not to "infringe" on our Second Amendment. We know who they are now.........SEND 'EM HOME. Our success in this will be proportional to how hard we work to make it happen.

Wish I had the option here. The more people do it, the more ordinary it becomes. Glad it went well for you.

Nope. Open carry has always been traditional in Montana, but was never actually legal by statute until this year, when the Governor signed HB228, the Montana Self Defense Law.

There you go, tired of asking for the SCD just OC. Problem solved, G2G!

Try eating in a place frequented more by Californicators, I'm thinking it'll be a different story.

That's a worthwhile and positive change.

Good story Captain BUT, now you made me want to close up shop here and go to Wendys.

I live in PA...Lehigh County to be exact. I used to always CC but now with the warmer weather I have been OC almost everyday and everywhere. No really makes a big deal about it. I get the occassional glance at my weapon but other then that, its been pretty uneventful.
