This gives you pretty accurate info, but always check the state laws on the i-Net prior to travel to a particular state...or ask about individual states on this forum.

I believe the number is 42 states. But check OpenCarry.org they have the information
Michigan's an open carry state. I don't suggest you attempt it in any of the more populated/liberal areas though (Detroit, GR, Lansing, ect...). Unless you enjoy being face flat on a hard surface...
GEORGIA
TENNESSEE
VIRGINIA
ARIZONA
KENTUCKY
NEW MEXICO
W. VIRGINIA
INDIANA
ID/MT/WY
All true open carry states.
MASS is an OC state by strict definition. Not at all in practice. I believe the same may be true of CA. So take the remark of there being 42 OC states with caution. What is not prohibited by state statute and what is culturally acceptable are two entirely different things. Also look out for the states that don't have preemption, like neighboring AL for me. One minute you may be okay to open carry and the next you may be subject to arrest as rules change by county.

I'm with Moga . . . even though it is listed as an "open carry" state many are not.

Arizona is open carry. No permit needed to own and/or open carry. Shall-issue permits are available for concealed carry, and Arizona accepts the CCW permits of several other states.

Actually, it's an anomalous state.
OR is open carry, except where local laws prohibit it (Portland, Beaverton, Tigard, Oregon City, Salem, and Independence [Opencarry.org])
HOWEVER, there is state preemption for CHL holders. i.e. if you have an Oregon CHL (OR does not recognize any other state's licenses), you can OC in those cities.
Also, dont expect a warm reception in Hood River or Eugene, either.

One is law the other is opinion. That's what the open carry movement is trying to overcome. The US and State constitutions protect the right.
As for Michigan, the grass root efforts have gone a long way to help educate and promote the right to openly carry within the state.
Yes there are rules to follow, more so in Michigan than some other states. But to say cultural acceptance says you shouldn't is ignorant.
There are only a few true open carry states. States which allow open carry without any kind of permit or condition. Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Vermont, South Dakota, Louisiana, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

Be aware that although NM is an open carry state it is a felony to OC where alcohol is sold even if it is not for consumption on the premises. So if you buy gas at one of the quick stops where beer is sold, and if you have to or decide to go inside you cannot OC. You cannot go inside a Walmart if it sells alcohol.
The law permits CC in those type places.
I did not read all of the thread re Grady's trip, but I was wondering when he bought gas in NM if he went into a place that sells alcohol OC.
