    Winchester Western Series gun safe

I am thinking about spending some of my bonus money on a gun safe. I don't want to spend a lot of money, my main goal is to buy something that will keep kids away from my guns and to have something that offers a bit of deterence if someone did break into the house. Good fire protection would be nice, but other than that I really don't need anything real fancy. I found the Winchester Western Series gun safe at gunsafes.com for 1350, it holds 45 guns and has 1 hr worth of fire protection. Does anyone have any experience with this safe? Is it a good buy?

I looked at them and decided Liberty Safe was better IMO.

What made you come to that decision?

I have a smaller Winchester Western, after I had it about a year the keypad & lock mechanism went bad. A 1 1/2 months and $275 dollars later it now has a dial lock on it.

I read a LOT about safes. Liberty just seemed better,in this price range,$1400.00 + delivery fee. The Liberty warranty for fire and theft is good. The certified Liberty safe people are only 90 miles from me. The Liberty Timber Ridge Deluxe is 700 lbs. empty. I guess it all depends on your needs. Check the Liberty website. I called many other safe companies and the customer service people were dumb as a stump, totally not concerned if I bought or not. I believe Gander Mountain stores have at least one person that is really sharp about the safes. It did take 3 visits to find that person.

Well, I'm down on Liberty: 2-3 tears ago (?) they came up with a new warranty that leaves out older (but apparently identical) product customers, which I thought that was pretty sorry of them.

I don't see how a 2005 Liberty Presidential (top of their line) safe is any less "quality" than a 2006, 2007, 2008 or newer safe (TMK, there were no real changes in design) -- so why the amended warranty couldn't apply to IT also I just don't get.

And the Liberty rep I talked to on the phone didn't seem to care. That's real poor 'customer service' after the sale...I guess they don't want repeat customers OR care that negative reviews of Liberty will be posted -- like here and now -- but Liberty decided otherwise. Beware of the poorly-treated customer: Negative press will cost a company more in the long run than doing the right thing in the beginning.

So, I must assume they made crap before -- even the Presidentials -- but NOW make good safes?

[Actually, I mean RSCs, as none of these types of products are truly safes regardless of brand, even the Ft. Knox products]

Whatever, for this and some other reasons, I would not buy a Liberty again (and I bought 3 of them before the warranty change: 2 Presidentials and 1 Colonial). Stupid me.

You might have better luck, but to me, a company that stands behind their product -- or not -- AFTER the sale is a big deal. And if Liberty treats their 'older' customers in this care-less way, why would they care about new customers?

Just a thought for potential Liberty customers...but I suggest you look for a better company that DOES care about ALL its customers. Liberty has proven it does not.

    Caveat emptor,

P.S. Besides the actual product quality, check into the warranty: Some companies have better warranties than others. And get the safe (within your budget) that has the thickest steel: More steel is better!

I shopped around alot and did my research. I went to the local safe seller here who had a few different brands but all my questions kept coming back to Liberty. The company here has been in business a long time with a good reputation and they pointed out that Liberty is all US made and gives them good, prompt customer service. I went with Liberty.
