You will probably only ever need the Magnesium metal in extremely adverse conditions.
Use your knife blade edge to scrape off shavings onto your tinder or other flammable substance. It is soft metal.
The actual firesteel rod is used as shown below. You MAY use your knife blade edge on my firesteel rod as VS the back spine of the blade as my firesteel rod is soft compared to some others and compared to a hardened steel blade and my rod will not dull any good quality knife blade.
She is using a cotton ball with a small amount of petroleum jelly AKA Vasiline rubbed into it.
You might wish to make yourself up some of that as it stores/keeps forever in any waterproof container.
