    Israeli body armor

Last gun show I went to there was a place selling Israeli body armor. They claimed that it was illegal to sell US body armor but theirs was kosher. ()

    Anyone know about this stuff?

Are you talking about the rifle plates, or the vest?

Are Kevlar vests legal for citizens to own in the US? The ones the LEO's use are Kevlar right?
Vermont does not issue Permit/Licenses to Carry a Concealed firearm. Vermont allows anyone
who can legally own a firearm to carry it concealed without a permit of any kind.

Kevlar is one of the fibers, though there are several newer ones as well. The legality varies by state but, in general, they are legal. There are any number of legitimate, legal places to buy "soft" body armor. Plates are also (generally, not entirely - research your own state laws thoroughly) legal, though some manufacturers/retailers choose to restrict sales to LE/govt type folks.

As an aside, it is quite common for vendors to put "Israeli" on something as a mark of its Cool Guy Factor, and/or to try to convince the general public that their "Israeli" product is somehow magically going to make you a high-speed Mossad assassin super killer. The fact is that much of what the Israelis use is crap, or "standard" at best. I would be wary of anything marketed that way, and especially wary because the vendor seems to be being less than forthright regarding the legality of US made ballistic vests...

I wouldn't want something with plates just something like the LEO's use when on raids etc.. Something to keep in the closet for when society crumbles. Any suggestions or sites to take a look at for that kind of thing?

get a plate carrier and plates because soft armor doesnt in general stop rifle caliber bullets without some typre of plates in whatever vest also when shtf you arent going to conceal a plate carrier very easily but who cares at that point

If you want to pick up a vest, go to your nearest LE supply store and ask to check them out. They will also be able to inform you about the legality of civilians owning said vest.

Unfortunately theirs no local Military or LE supply store anywhere around here. I'll do the research and find out the legality tidbits just wondering if you guys know any reputable online places to buy. I'm sure being Vermont it won't be a problem owning one but I will make sure.

Galls, bulletproofme.com, Diamondback Tactical, any number of on-line police supply retailers will have lots of info/products.

My local military surplus store sells soft Kevlar vests. They're not illegal here in Oklahoma, however if you wear one whilst committing a felony the law provides for increased time in the pokey.

Copquest.com is one of my favorite online sources for equipment. Just search it, there will be many returns.

If you're not LEO & you don't intend to wear it every day & only want to hold onto one for possible future SHTF purposes then shop Ebay for one. They pop up all the time on Ebay.

    Search for Body Armor

    Search for Bullet Proof Vest

There are always retired LEO & Security officers that need to part with one.

There are also PDs that are upgrading to more modern, lighter vests and they often get rid of stored unissued vests.

They are the ideal sort of used ones to shop for.

Many are in really nice "like new" condition.

Do not buy any older "SECOND CHANCE" because some of them have factory defective Kevlar.

Also the newer ones are lighter and many people that need to wear one are upgrading to a lighter more advanced design.

Make sure that the Kevlar inserts have a new looking label. Try to get yourself a Threat Level IIIA.

Remember that what really deteriorates Kevlar is long term exposure to UV (UltraViolet Light) AKA The SUN....so if the carrier is all bleached out and faded then (for sure) stay away from any of those.

Stay away from any that look really used and abused.

Remember that you're always taking somewhat of a gamble when you shop for any used vest...so you're on your own to make an adult decision.

if u buy one from a surplus store, make sure it is rated for ballistics and not fragmentation, we had an officer before my time who picked a vest up from a surplus store, got shot with a 9mm and the vest failed because it was only rated for fragmentation. Make sure it is rated for ammunition from a pistol or handgun before buying, otherwise all u have is a feel good vest. Better than nothing though, the vest did alter the trajectory of the round enough that it passed directly under his heart and pushed the artery out of the way instead of severing it. That guy is lucky to be alive
