AR 15: Floating Rail or Conventional?

On a whim, I bought a quad rail for my AR-15. It is a floating rail and I did not realize that I needed a gunsmith when I bought it. I had the front sight removed and changed the gas tube.

I like how I have the ability to attach accessories to it - although I have not, yet.

I got a quad rail, but it's not free floating. With a 16" barrel that I have, I don't think it makes much difference since I have a holo sight on it and shoot shorter distances.

If you put pressure on the rail system - either via a tight "sling supported" hold, a vertical fore grip, a field expedient brace, or whatever - then the floating rail may matter. For "normal" use, a standard rail is fine. I have a "monolithic upper" on my Noveske (meaning that the rail is an integral part of the upper receiver and is inherently free floated), because it is a precision system. For a "beater" AR, I don't think it is terribly important.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.
