    Target suggestions

I go to a public outdoor range that is free. I usually set up some paper targets and go to town. Well, recently I have been setting up some bottles and cans when no one else is at the range so I can clearly see a hit at 25 yards. My problem is I'm tired of constantly having to go and set them all back up. When other people are at the range I can't always go and set them back up even when I'm done, and there are always the idiots who don't know what they're doing shooting my targets before I get to them. Anyway, I wanted to get some reset/spinning targets(not sure of the exact name) so I shoot more and set up less. Just wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions on this idea. I looked at a local gun store but only found 5" targets. I will probably get one of those but wanted a 2" - 3" size as well.

Sprotsmansguide occassionally has pistol-caliber steel spinners.

Also, you may want to check with a local welder. I use to make my own spinning targets using U-bolts and scrap nuts/bolts/steel plates. May be able to find someone wiliing to weld up a few for a good price.

If we assume you are able to use anything steel and reactive - it could well be worth making something up, tho yes - Sportsmansguide usually has some choices - Cabela's too IIRC.

Here is one I made up - using all but scrap pieces - some channel for arms, 1/2 plate paddles (approx 6 x 4 size), and a hub of tube that fits over some round bar welded into ground spike.

Each arm has scrap gussets added to reduce distortion after many hits. This one is now very ''distressed'' but a useful and still useable item - each hit makes it spin and almost all times it stops leaving a paddle facing the shooter.

A 15 round sequence of .22 hits gets it turning quite nicely!

    Nice target P95.

Next time I get a chance, I will post all the various targets I have made up, and maybe even a tutorial or how to make them.

I even came up with a $5.00 "poor mans pepper popper" that I will have to share when I get time to take pictures and all that.

Ah, you need to come to my place.

We have some deer that apparently roam around pretty often and leave little "precision targets" sitting on the hill that makes up my backstop.

hsu - a thread on DIY targets would be most interesting.

Ritz crackers work well for .22 rifle plinking... spray paint them for a little better visibility. Clay birds are great on the berm. I have a few steel 'spinner' type targets, a heavier one for centerfire pistols, and a light one for .22's. I think the .22 one came from wally world, and I bought the heavier one from Dick's sporting goods.

I'd love to see some plans for DIY targets, as well!
Liberty is an inherently offensive lifestyle. Living in a free society guarantees that each one of us will see our most cherished principles and beliefs questioned and in some cases mocked. It's worth it.

P95 Ill see what I can put together the next time I make a run to the farm, where I keep my stash of targets.

I use to work at a tractor and farm implement dealer, so I had access to all the scrap, nuts, and bolts you could ever dream of. U-bolts make for some great and very durable target frames...I even built one thick enough and stong enough for my 8mm mauser, and other steel core mil-surp ammo.

Pistol-caliber targets are easy, usually only requires1/4-3/8 thick steel plate, a frame, an axis to spin on, and some stakes to secure it to the ground.

Expect to see a "working-man" DIY target thread real soon.
