Alternatives ?!?!?!?!?!

After a couple of comments in another thread about canes, and another thread about "living" versus CC, I wanted to just throw a few ideas out as fodder to allow everyone to add their alternative defensive weapons...................

My favorite alternative is a Cold Steel City Stick: City Stick : Walking Sticks (Cold Steel)

I have carried mine on post 9/11 airplanes, all over Europe, and numerous other places where virtually all common weapons might otherwise be prohibited. In Europe I was privately escorted to many private museum entrances (Louvre, de Orsay, etc.) thus short-cutting some lines. :yup:

Other weapons could include coin rolls as brass knuckles or as saps in a sock, rolled up magazines, and probably a million others!

What are your favorites?

Well, my cane goes EVERYWHERE with me, so I am never truly unarmed.
Beyond the cane I have considered many improvised weapons from a #2 pencil to a welding torch. I tend to look around me at what might be used for defense. Not just weapons, but location and positioning as well.

In high school I was cornered by a bully who threatened to 'geld' me with a knife that he was waving around. He put his hand on the desk as he leaned over me, so I slammed the pencil in my hand through the web of his thumb. It was quite effective at getting his attention.

Very well done. I sure hope your Principal saw the beauty in that.

Some of these things are illegal in many if not all states; e.g., brass knuckels. I have a particular flashlight that I like to keep around and I practice using it as a striking tool and for breaking holds and grabs. The thing I like about it is that it is perfectly legal to keep nearby or in a back pocket.

The infamous box cutter (and some variants on the basic design) is not by design a weapon, but can inflict severe wounds--and the blade can be deployed very very quickly. There are many good reasons for having a box cutter handy which help slip it under the radar of the term "weapon."

Belts with heavy belt buckles may be useful. I've personally not practiced with them or to defend against them; I should.

The most creative self defense device I've ever seen was hand made by an ex-sheriff who at the time was working for the phone company. He made a beautifully artistic bouquet of flowers for his wife out of brass.

Each leaf had sharpened edges. Each stem had a point. Each petal was sharpened and pointed. It all came together in a round knob-like handle. He left it on the floor of his wife's car and told her if she needed to defend herself to just swing it wildly. That thing was wicked. Absolutely wicked. A diminutive lady swinging that thing could take anyone out.

I think a cane is a great idea, but I think it is not congruent with my general appearance. I'm uninterested in keeping a younger look -- and the inside parts are all screwed up so the book cover is telling a lie -- but a cane just wouldn't look right in my hands.
