    Leather Gun Belt question

    Gentlemen:

I am needing a new gun belt due to additional girth. Here's my question: where does one go for a slightly thinner quality gun belt? Beltman's belts and Bullhide belts are right at 1/4" thick. Most plastic belt clips will not fit a 1/4" belt. I wear Perry suspenders to help carry my pistol's weight.....they will not clip onto a 1/4" belt. I want the quality of a good leather gun belt, but 1/4" thick is just too much. Any ideas?

    Thank you to all.

I've got two Crossbreeds (one in each color) and I love them. Just measured the one I'm wearing and it's 1/8" thick. If I had to get another belt for whatever reason, I wouldn't think twice. Crossbreed FTW

A real gun belt shouldn't require the assistance of suspenders.

Are you sure? I have a gun belt from BullhideBelts.com and my Perry suspenders clip onto them just fine. I agree that as a rule a good belt should obviate the need for suspenders, but if you have a lot of crap in your pockets or run a 'bat utility belt' they're useful.

You could also try El Paso Saddlery. They make some of the finest holsters in my opinion, and they make a wide variety of belts as well.

Good evening! The solution to your needs is to simply make a thinner belt...a little less than say 1/4 thick? I made a belt for a gentleman a couple of days ago that was made with 2 layers 6-7oz of double shoulder and came out to be 3/16." Suspenders are not necessary if you have a good belt. Let me know if I can help you out sir. Be glad to make you something.

Thank you to all for your replies. The common theme is " a good gun belt does not need suspenders." I agree to a certain point. If one is built more like John Candy than The Rock; tightening a gun belt enough to support a fullsize 1911 becomes unbearably tight and uncomfortable. The suspenders allow loosening the belt enough to sit and even breathe.

    Thank you again.

This is what I am currently using. 5.11 Tactical Trainers belt with a D-ring buckle. The tag end has velcro to keep it in place after buckling.

I tend to wear the same pants when I am carrying IWB and when not. This allows for infinite adjustment as you are not limited by the holes in the belt like a traditinal buckle. Wearing IWB it can be looser, just keep on cinching when not. Works great and super stiff for a non leather belt. Only 3/16" thick as well.

With the suspenders you wouldn't really need a "gun belt". Most belts marketed for guns are so designed to carry the full weight of the gun without help. As a large guy myself, I can see the benefits of suspenders. But it could very well be that you don't actually need to spend the premium that the other guys do. I would go to your local clothing store and try to find a good stiff belt that is off the shelf and try it. You may find that with the suspenders you have no trouble at all. And do it for $20 no less :)

Many of the belt makers offer both dual-hide and single-hide variants of their belts. Whichever is your choice in vendor, just ask. Some of them spell it out clearly, in the descriptions for each of their belts. My belts have all been built with two hides of ~8-9oz leather, bonded/sewn together. Some belt makers offer a couple different thicknesses of hides. If they'll allow, you might be able to specify use of the thicker hides on a single-hide belt they make for you.

BTW, I've only had dual-hide belts, ever. They're all roughly 0.25" thick. And every single holster I have ever bought works just fine with them. Haven't used Perry suspenders, so I can't speak to their suitability in combination.

What I'd ask of a belt maker while attempting to decide:

    • What weight/thickness of hides do you use for your top-quality belts?
    • Do you offer both dual-hide and single-hide variants?
    • Can you build a fairly thick single-hide belt that'll be of sufficient stiffness to support a heavier gun rig, one that's plenty stiff but sufficiently thinner to better work with supporting gear?

That ought to get you the answers you need. Of course, not all belt makers will be able to comply.

Hey pcctex, my 1/4 inch bullhide belt fits my comptac c clips perfectly. Food for thought if you didn't want to sacrifice the thickness of the belt.

+1 on El Paso Saddlery. Also you can't go wrong with Dillon Leather or Don Hume IMHO. I have (2) Dillons that are 16+ yrs old and are still going strong despite being worn daily when I was a Detective. YMMV.
