    Winchester 24 Rifle Safe

I've been searching for a while but can't afford $1K or more for a fire rated safe. I saw this bad boy listed on Craigslist and was able to get it for $400. I couldn't be happier!

$400 for a $1200 MSRP safe with some decent features? Sounds like a bargain.

    Western 21, 2010 model year

    • 600 lbs
    • 1 Hour @ 1400 ̊F Fire Rating
    • 3 layers of 5/8" fireboard in the door
    • 3 layers of 5/8" fireboard in the body
    • Palusol heat expandable door seal
    • Composite door construction
    • Solid steel 12 gauge body construction for added protection
    • U.L Listed for Burglary
    • Residential Security Container
    • U.L Tool Attack
    • U.L Listed lock
    • 12 gauge body construction for added protection
    • Composite door construction
    • Drill resistant hard plate 60-61Rc
    • Auxiliary relocker to resist tool attack on the lock
    • 4-way bolt work
    • 1-1/4" solid steel locking bolts
    • Up to 14 locking bolts
    • External hinges allow 180 degree door swing
    • Convertible interior
    • Dehumidifier access hole
    • Pre-drilled bolt-down holes for anchoring safe to floor

My preference is for a safe with at least 8ga steel or better, two to three times the weight, etc. But then, no such things comes along at $400, very often.

    Congrats on the new safe.

Nice deal. Personally, I have little faith in electronic locks.

Congrats on the deal, I have the same safe. The electronic lock on mine failed and it took a few weeks and a few hundred dollars to get into it. It has a dial lock on it now.

That sucks. It just wouldn't open for no reason? Water damage?

I've opened mine a couple dozen times so far without any issues.

I didn't get a manual with this thing. Do you, by chance, remember how to change the passcode?

FWIW, it seems that those e-locks are much more prone to crapping out. When I was buying my safe I did a lot of reading and talking to some locksmith folks and they pretty much all agreed that the e-lock, while convenient, is less reliable mechanically.

One of the biggest issues is they will, apparently, just up and die on you; leaving you locked out of your safe. This is obviously bad because you have to get a locksmith to get you back in, in addition to changing out the lock itself. When a mechanical lock goes, it usually goes over time and acts up, so you know to get it changed out while you still have access to the safe.

The upside is as long as it's working, you can change it out relatively easy, because you don't have to break into the safe to do so.

Or it may work forever... It's just a little more of a gamble with those e-locks.

Did you get the passcode changed? I might have the manual laying around.

The E-Lock worked just fine until one day it wouldn't open. The lock company sent a new keypad, but the problem was the electronic locking mechanism.

Yup. I had a little scare though. The instructions I used where for the wrong model so it ended up locking me out. I had opened the door first (just in case) so I was stuck with a safe that I couldn't close. After 15 minutes or so, it let me try again. I found the correct instructions and it worked perfectly.

I hope I don't have issues with the lock like some of you have. I wonder how common that is? Sure there are reports of it online but most people only write a report for a product that's broke. I wonder how many have had no issues. I really don't want to change the lock as a precaution when it MAY work forever without issue.
