Considerations: lumens (>80), LED vs. bulb (bulb is always cheaper but you make up iy for in bulbs), batteries (123s vs. standard size vs. rechargable), mfg. reputation (Surefire and Streamlight head the list), size (big enough to use as striking weapon is a plus), switch (tailcap, make sure in can do momentary on, some of the brand X can't or work poorly), cost with shipping or tax.

A lot of good suggestions already posted. If you know any LEOs or EMS guys, they usually have the best trial and error comments.

Let us know what you decide on.

I have two flashlights that I alternately carry.

Inova X5 & Cyclops CXF. Both are well built great little lights. The X5 is a LED (20 hour burn time) & the CXF is a Xenon (1 hour burn time). They both throw a good beam (but the Xenon is brighter) and both are the right size to double as a Kubotan or Yawara stick. I'm happy with either one. I paid roughly $30 for each (IMO money well spent).

I've looked at the Surefires, great lights but too expensive for me. I think about half the price is because of the name. I really couldn't see a big difference in quality but Surefire devotees will strongly disagree.

    Everyday carry Surefire E2D.
IF it doesn't blind them....it'll give 'em a nice headache and a great new scar to talk about!

Have you seen the new 6P with the "teeth" around the bezel?

    Heinous looking!

I just got a new Surefire G2 that I found for $31.50 that I am extremely happy with, you should give that a look.

surefire are excellent lights. (i don't use any other even as a regular flashlight now). it's the batteries that destroy your wallet.
    What's this button do?

Question for all you LEOs... If you stopped or detained John Q Public and you found that he was carrying a 6P or an E2D would you view it as a weapon (concealed or otherwise) or would you view it as a flashlight?

I'm not an LEO, but that is a good question.

Surprised no one has mentioned Aviator A2. Red LEDs are great for conserving night vision.

I would probably seize it until my interview with the subject is over. Not saying it's a weapon - but in all reality, defensive purposes is what it was made for.

Steel toed boots aren't weapons either...until you kick somebody's guts out while wearing them!

I had the chance to see one of the new 6P's with the "sawblade" bezel and I damn sure don't wanna get stuck with it!

    EXCELLENT question, BTW!

I have not read the four pages of responses, but I will add my recommendation for an Inova T2 flashlight.

It's not nearly as expensive as some (like the Surefires) but it's LED, runs on lithium CR123 batteries, puts out a good amount of light, and is sturdy. It can be carried easily and comfortably in a nylon belt sheath. I particularly like the fact that it has a momentary-on tailcap switch (which can be twisted to "lockout" mode so that it can't be inadvertently turned on during transport).

I don't remember how much I paid, but I think it was in the $40-50 range.
