Snowdoctor- My son is only 7 months old. But I am also concerned about my apartment getting broken into and my guns being stolen. I think a safe is the best way for me to go. It's just going to take me some time to gather up the funds necessary to do so. I was looking at this one at wal-mart: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=4564314

That looks exactly like the one I have! I think it's a 14 gun though. That or the listing of 10 gun is in error. They had both the electronic and manual when I bought mine----and I believe both are the same size. Most of your local Wal-Marts should have these in stock now. Might go physically look at them and try them out. Those do have an adjustable top shelf for smaller things like pistols, mags, ammo, holsters, etc...... A very good value no doubt.

I started with that safe and when I outgrew it, I sold it to a friend and upgraded to the Cannon t27 http://www.cannonsafe.com/safestraditionalseries.nxg

If I ever (when) I outgrow mine, I'll get another just like it. These fit in most closets very nicely and don't take up an awful lot of room.

I haven't ever seen a safe at a Wal-Mart and I've been in quite a few(Ohio, Texas, Virginia). The only place that has a variety of safes around here is Bass Pro Shops, and all of theirs are over priced like everything else in that store. I've also seen one at the Lowes here in town. That would be awsome if I could go pick one up and save myself $100 in shipping!

EDIT: The safe that I posted a link for says it's available online only. Looks like I wont be abel to get away from that shipping cost on that safe.

Wal-Mart only carries safes during hunting season, at least that's what my Wal-Mart does.
Check garage sales and estate sales you might get lucky.

Hmm- I'm visit the various wal-marts around town pretty regularly and I've never seen one. It's probably just because of wher I am right now.

Start with a small safe for now and upgrade later.

My safe is unlocked when myself or wife is at home and then it gets locked when we leave.

I've got 4 kids(4mos to 11years) and start them with gun safety very early.

Just find a closet, take out the cheap doorknob and put a deadbolt in there. Same size holes and you can put the knob back when you move.
