I've had a few comments about my shoot me first bib overalls. I do have one of the vests from The Holster Vest and I like it a bunch. It's comfortable and I've never had a comment about me and CCW while wearing it.

I have a 5.11 vest that I wear quite a bit. I think its hilarious that even when I go to the ranges around here the only comment I get is, "So you planning on taking a lot of pictures when you are here, or are you going fishing right after..." I guess the greater Portland/Vancouver metro area isn't big on 5.11.....

Janq makes a very good point!

Fortunately for me, there really isn't anything about a vest (short of adding patches) in the area I live in that would cause people to think gun.

However, I like the whole idea of not giving away any tactical advantage I might have... so I may have to adapt a little to keep from standing out on occasion!

I wear a vest when birdhunting, so I can understand the utility aspect of them. But I think its more of a fashion thing for those of us who choose not to wear one, and shame on you if its a fashion thing if you do wear one.

I tend to wear a lot of sport coats. A couple of the ones I wear have up to 3 inside pockets on each side. It looks nice over a pair of jeans, or over a pair of biz casual pants.

Sport coats are excellent cover garments, plus they add many pockets for mags (or all the other stuff I see on so many EDC lists on this forum).

All that, and the ladies dig em (or 'lady' in my situation).

My question for you Thumper is - if you have so many vests (5.11, SigTac, Orvis) how do you decide which one you will wear that day? And what do you put in the pockets? Gum, chapstick, keys, cell phone, knife, multitool, flashlight....I'm running out of ideas and you've still got 10 pockets left!

It's all very technical ya know... 5.11 on cooler days (cuz it's heavier), SIG TAC most of the time (cuz I like it the best) and Orvis when I don't want to look too tacticool!

As for gear... I only go light on rainy days cuz we have some deep puddles 'round here!

And don't forget, snack bars, camera, iPod, reading glasses, small bible, blue tooth headset for the cellular and a small Ham Radio (2m, 6m & 440)!

Bought a concealed holster vest intending to use it for concealed carry until the wife insisted it branded me like a neon sign. I wore it mostly as a nurse: home care for special needs children: on field trips especially I could pack several diapers, wipes, meds, feeding syringes, bottles, etc. in the several overt and covert pockets. Got some ribbing as the movie had recently come out about a special ops had been assigned to kiddy care and in one promo scene he's manfully thrusting twin baby bottles into what are obviously magazine pockets.

My idea of "cover garments" is just to wear what I do on a daily basis...

Geoffrey Beene casual shirt and jacket, dockers & Rockport shoes.

Wearing that I can conceal just about any handgun(s), magazines, fixed blades, surefires or the like.

About ten years ago I purchased a Coronado Safari vest (see pic).

It is an exceptionally high quality (expensive) carry vest. It can carry almost any size handgun with ease and complete concealabilty and I have never, never been made while wearing it. Because it is so good looking I have worn it to church, casual dinner in a "good" restaurant, outdoor barbecue function and have never even been questioned. As a concealment vest I recommend it completely. While the price is, indeed, high I have had mine for 10 years and it still looks very, very good.

I have a 5.11 vest, but seldom wear it...not because it says 'gun' (I don't really think it does...), but because FL weather just doesn't make it practical...an open shirt or a large T-shirt works just fine. OMO

To me, a vest in FL does say 'gun'...unless you're also lugging around a $2K camera with a big honkin' lens and flash

+1 Janq...I also shoot IDPA in clothing I would normally wear.

I usually wear some kind of vest daily, because I like pockets!
When I'm wearing a fanny pack,
-black one, just has my camcorder and digicam in it
-green one, when skiing, emergency stuff.

I've never received any odd looks from LEO's or anyone that I've noted...
My wife hates the tactical look, so I ditched the 5.11 vest.
(but I still wear 5.11, Blackhawk pants)
I've never been accused of being GQ!
