    Scorpion vs G2

I was always fond of my Streamlight scorpions until a camping trip this weekend. The bulb on the streamlight came loose at a time that I really needed the flashlight and I'm not too happy about it. I have a G2 in the house, but I really don't like the screw on cap thing.

Anyone have a bad experience with Streamlight?

I have another Streamlight scorpion on my M4, but I'm having trust issues.

My G2 has always worked well. I use a streamlight mini LED for work now though too. I have had no problems with either brand. Why aren't you using a headlamp for camping anyway?

I had several flashlights with me, but my Streamlight Scorpion is my emergency light. It failed me when I need it and had to use my AA Mini-Maglite.

Any gear failing sucks . Especially out in the boonies , where it is more apt to be really needed. At least you had a back up light.

I've been growing fond of the crank flashlights that you see going for less than $20. I had two of them with me also. They worked.

Just an FYI, I found at Dick Sporting Goods a Dorcy 120 lumans for $39. I find that to be a pretty good deal on a very good light. My 6P is only 60 lumans and it requires the pricey batteries while the Dorcy only need 3 AAA's. Just my .02 cents y'all.

Interesting.... I shop at Dick's often. I know which light you're talking about. I picked up my Mini-mag there and the xenon upgrade.

I'd go with the Surefire between the two, BUT I'd go with a LED drop-in. You won't have to worry about the bulb if you go LED. Or get a Fenix LED flashlight. If those are out of your preferred price range, there are some decent LED flashlights at Wal-Mart (Rayovac 3-watt 80 lumen, or Coleman Max 115 lumen). They are both under $25.

Jamie, the Surefire Z58 and Z59 tailcaps will fit the G2. They are hard anodized and black aluminum, respectively, and are click-on/lock out type with momentary. Unfortunately, they retail for $38 - more than the G2 itself!

Yes, this is a design flaw with the Scorpion IMO. Basically you cannot trust the bulb won't come out at any time.

A lesser issue, the rubber sleeve on the Scorpion also (non-intuitively) doesn't lend itself to good waterproofing. It can also come lose which is slightly annoying.

The G2 is built much better.

Note however that the original G2 model completely lacked waterproofing in the tailcap which is a pretty serious oversight IMO. The current model rectifies this issue.

Note also the G2 is available in an LED version which negates the potential of failure via a burnt out bulb.

    Bottom line, I wouldn't bet my life with a Scorpion. I would a G2. Better yet a G2 LED.

I'd definitely go with the G2 with a R2 LED Lamp Upgrade. These drop in lamps put out about 290 lumens !

Hereis a cheapie from DX. I can't say it is up to Surefire reliability standards, but the one I have works perfectly. I'd probably suggest keeping your existing lamp assembly in an empty film canister or something in your glove compartment, just in case. Any problems with these LED drop-in modules usually stem from poor contact with the batteries or current carrying strip/tube within the body of the light.

I have a Bug Out Gear and a Malkoff LED drop-in for my two of my Surefires. True, I paid about $60 for them. But they will kick the poo out of those $12 ones.
