Mec-Gar & Promag

Anyone have experience with these brands of magazines?

Thinking of buying a few for my new P226 from Midway. The prices are half what they ask for Sigarms mags.

Also, do the Mec-Gar 17rnd mags stick out the bottom?

pro mag useally = junk

mec gar useally = Factory mag not sure if they make sigs or not but since they do most oem mags i bet they do as for 17rd make one of the sig guys will have to answer that

I understand that Mec-Gar makes some of the "factory" mags for the SIG Company. I have one Mec-Gar for my 226 and use it like the SIGs.

I think Mec-Gar are generally reckoned to be good after-market mags - they do make mags for some main manufacturers IIRC. Pro-mag not so sure. Seem to remember, avoid USA mags!

Do tho as well - check out to see if some used LE factory mags are available. I got my 15 rounders thru a search - CDNN was out of stock but a search found me a site (forgotten of course!) and the guy had some coming in - took three off him.

Not sure if the 17's stick out - my 20's sure do LOL!

Oh and BTW - Eagle mags which are dirt cheap - while not always at all good - can be with some tweaking be made well workable for range use - I have some and three were needy of slight tweaks - and they can drop all they like during IDPA shoots - keeps the good ones from getting full of crud sometimes.

MGs have good reps, usually because they are actually the OEM mag.

According to the Sig LE rep for my area MG does in fact make the OEM Sig mags.

I bought a few ProMags for my Beretta way back when. They ended up in the garbage not long after receiving them. Several ftf issues and, IIRC, they didn't seat very well at all. Never again.

Odd the Promags seemed to work well in my 220. But then again that was a single stack magazine.

Yes, Mec~Gar makes the FACTORY mags for SIG.
They have made the SIG FACTORY mags for quite some time.

It's funny that the aftermarket Mec~Gar SIG magazines are better finished than the ones that they actually make for the SIG factory. Not Better Quality...just better cosmetic finish.
And Mec~Gar makes mags for many other firearm manufacturers.

I REALLY LIKE Mec~Gar Magazines & have quite a few of them for my Colts & for my SIGs.

BTW...I do not like ProMag Magazines.
Fine maybe for the range but, not for defense carry...nope not me. I won't carry them.

Mec Gar's are excellent magazines.

I'd pass on Pro Mag for anything other than range use.

My $20 Pro-Mag for my Sig P245 is a total POS. I actually waited until there was street construction going on near me and put it under the "wheel" of the steamroller. The guy in charge wanted to know why and I told him the mag was defective and I didn't want to sell it for fear that I might be responsible for somebody's death. He let me do it and had the guy run over it twice. I never saw anything quite so FLAT that was metallic. I'll never buy a Pro-Mag or recommend them to anybody. Mec-Gar isn't bad, but I don't think I own any of the guns for which they make mags. The only Sig stuff they seem to do is the 9mm stuff like the P226. Hey, if I win that P226 from the other thread, maybe I'll test out a Mec-Gar!

I don't know I had a few Mec-Gars for a .40S&W Browning HP that needed tweaking to run right. Even though they were supposed to be makers of the ones for Browning they just weren't as well done in this case, IMHO, just felt rougher.
Of course that was back in around 1996-97.

Pro mag does seem to be junk. Seeing my friends Glock and my own problems with AR Pro mags I would not buy em.

I also would pass on the promags. I ordered two for a Kahr and they have never feed a entire magazine without a malfunction. Sent them back under Promags warranty and the second two are just as bad if not worse.

Megar makes mags for Sig..........also 'made in Italy" is stamped on the side of the mag, if it's not stamped "Sig Sauer"
I have a fewe for the 226 I recently aquired.........they work well, but keep an eye open for sloppy/tight fit on the mag catch slots..
If you can, measure the distance from the top of the mag, to the slot..especially if you have genuine Sig stamped mags..
