Todays wood is Koa from Hawaii. Koa has been used for centuries in everything from jewelry to canoes to war clubs. Koa ranges in color from a lighter honey color to a rich dark brown and can have no figure or go to the other extreme and have some very heavy and deep curl figure like shown here. A beautiful wood to be sure!

Today's wood is English Walnut. Solid and dense it's perfect for grip panels. The good stuff still has the inky black veining running through the rich chocolate brown base color but is becoming harder and harder to find. Beautiful stuff!

We're all used to seeing cocobolo used in grips, but most of the time they are either so bland, or so stained and coated with finish that you can't appreciate the wood fully. This set is an example of the wood in it's glorious best.
    Enjoy the beauty!

Those Purpleheart grips are real nice. Purpleheart is so dense it's one of the few woods that won't float.

Woods don't have to be exotic to be gorgeous. Just look at these different grip sets in maple. Exhibition grade maple.

Here's a twist - This is a set I did for a customer who wanted something that very closely resembled natural Ivory, but without the worries of it. This was my answer. I made these out of Corian which is impervious to cleaners, weather, sweat, normal wear and cracking. I stippled the grips as you can hopefully see in the pics. They came out quite well and fit the frame lines like a glove which is something I always strive for.
Anyway, it's a little different, so enjoy the pics!

Okay, these are just too cool to not share. Check out the beauty of nature displayed in these spalted Maple grips! The wood was way too soft to use for anything on it's own, but I sent the pieces off to be professionally stabilized and now they're solid and great for use in grips. Beautiful wood!
    Enjoy,

I sure wish you'd either quit posting these pictures or get the equipment to do stuff other than 1911 grips. You're driving me crazy that I can't get some of these.

I dive every chance I get down on the Sea of Cortez and pick up my desert ironwood from guys selling it on the beaches, so I have some, but it is mostly dark. I think I have some that is pretty cool and lighter, but I haven't cut it up yet. So many woods, so little time.
Glad that you all are enjoying the pics and the beauty of the woods.
