You don't have to play it, you just have to let people believe that you can play it.
The Marblewood is crosscut (like many of my favorites) which is something a lot of people don't like to do. Crosscutting woods opens them up to many potential fabrication difficulties that aren't there if you just go with the grain. Marblewood is especially challenging as it likes to warp severely if not dried evenly once crosscut. Once they're fabricated and finished, they are solid, beautiful and worry free. I have a matched pair of bobtails/governments that just received the final coat last night. Heavy, gorgeous patterns that match across both sets. They probably won't end up being sold as a set, but they're beautiful when looking at them together.

Today I figured I'd just put up pics of the different Micarta products. There seems to be some confusion on what they look like, so here we go. NO worries, we're back to the woods tomorrow.
Black Paper Micarta with satin poly finish

    Black Linen Micarta oil finish

    Black Canvas Micarta oil finish

As you can see, the texture gets rougher as you go from paper (smooth) to linen (some texture) to canvas (roughest texture). Micarta is also available in various colors, but any of it will be in one of these 3 textures.
Here's some bonus pics of the Paper Micarta in Ivory (one of my favorite manmade materials). Looks a lot like natural Ivory.
    Enjoy,
    Sarge

It's not their "turn" to be shown (I'm a little anal about the order of things), but here are the two matched sets of Marblewood grips that I was talking about. Hard to believe that when NOT crosscut like this, the wood is boring. Carmel color with brown stripes going up and down and that's it. Crosscut it and WOW! Beautiful stuff!
    Enjoy,

Todays set is more unique and beautiful Buckeye Burl. The colors, movement and figure in this stuff is constantly changing, but always beautiful!

Sarge, Can you still make Bone Corian grips, and also can you make the Buckeye Burl in thins? Thanks.

Since the Buckeye is stabilized, yes, I can use it in the ultra thins. I bet I can get my hands on more of the bone corian. Everyone that purchased those is really surprised at how much they look like ivory AND with how they feel in the hand. They actually have a tactile feel to them, especially when wet.
    Thanks,

I hope everybody had a great holiday weekend!
The set today is Red Mallee Burl from Australia. Beautiful wood with it's red color and great pattern. A hard wood, it's nicely suited for use in grip panels.
    Enjoy,

Another great set in spalted Hackberry. The wood doesn't look like much when it's rough, but it sure cleans up nicely!

I used this set for pictures of my new 2009 CBOB and they caused a flurry of emails and questions. This is the first set I've done with "color stabilized" woods. This is actually Black Ash Burl that has been double stabilized first in red, then in blue. The result is very nice, although I'm still not sold on non-natural colored woods. I still won't stain wood myself, but I guess I can live with it if it's done as part of the stabilization. What do you guys/gals think?

    Very nice effect.
They say that you can't improve on Mother Nature but, those look mighty sweet.
More of a slight "enhancement" on Mommy Nature as VS an Improvement.

Thanks for your input gentlemen. I'm always torn on stuff like this, so if people in general like it, then I'll bring some various types in. I appreciate your thoughts!

Cochinchin burl is SO varied in what is has to show us. Some places are nothing but eyes in a rich brownish green color, and others are like this set which has a great range of colors with very cool patterns to it. This set is cool in that the lower portions have some small specks of cool bright orange that gives way to a darker more gray color at the top. Really kinda looks like a fire and the smoke cloud it produces. I'm sure you'll see your own thing it them if the color of the pics shows up properly.
    Anyway, enjoy!

Todays set is another Aussie wood - Corrugata Burl. Great carmel color and full burl coverage in addition to being a very solid wood, make this a great choice for grip panels. I've always liked this wood, and hope you enjoy seeing it.

Todays set is Afzelia Burl. The color in this wood can range from a light gold, to a light orange. It's know for it's swirling graining and great burl patterns. A cousin to Amboyna burl.
    Enjoy!
