This is a set that will probably hit the site tonight at some point. Amboyna Burl in officer size with inset Navy medallions. I put the medallions down into the wood and then cover them with clear resin before finish shaping the blank and applying the polyurethane. The result is a crystal clear view of the medallions WITH a perfectly smooth surface. A little extra work, but it's the way I'd want mine, so it's the way I do others. They are very nice.

Todays set is done in Ziricote. A very interesting wood that often has this unusual pattern in it that you see in the pics. Heavy and sometimes seemingly disassociated veining can make this wood look like 2 or 3 trees grew together at some point. Another solid wood that works well for grip panels.

The set for today is Rambutan. Probably the hardest wood I've ever worked with. I've seen metal that sands down quicker than this stuff! Also a wood that want to make very sure is dry prior to working it. It will curl, shrink, and otherwise give you fits if it's not dry.
A beautiful red color with some very fine dark lines running through it, it goes well with dark or light frames.

Here's a set of bob's done in some Desert Ironwood I brought home with me from a dive trip.
Like the name says, it's a hard wood. Has some great color and graining to it!

I had a set of custom Desert Ironwood grips on an early Ruger Redhawk.
I eventually sold that gun but, I loved those grips.
Let me add to the showcase of Sarge's talents here...
As some of you may recall, I had a little gunsmithing project in which I built a 9mm 1911 off of a Fusion Scout kit. After I finally got it back from finishing, I had Sarge make a set of grips for it.
The finish is Silver Yukon coat (and the pictures don't do it justice---it has a lot more texture, almost like cut granite, than any picture I have ever seen of it shows) and the grips are Amboyna.

Amboyna burl. That is quite a rare and "high dollar" wood.
I am best guessing that the very nicest examples of it are rarer still.

All should know that Kazzaerexys was a great person to deal with and very gracious even after I made a small, but boneheaded mistake on his grips. We got it taken care of and moved on, but I appreciate his taking it in stride when we were in the midst of it.
Todays set is done in Black Palm. Most people have no idea what kind of "stuff" is inside a palm tree, but now you have the chance to see it. There are two main types of palm wood - black and red. When dry they resemble a bunch of ropes running through a looser material that binds them together. In fact, if you crosscut it, it's just a bunch of dots. Many people will not work with this wood due to it's almost explosive nature, especially on a lathe. I've always like the challenge of it, and now that I found a professional stabilizer, it makes it a pleasure to do. You can see the rope pattern in the pics. I think the black looks great on a stainless weapon.
