I looked it up and it looks VERY close (at least in the pic I saw) to my East Indian Rosewood. Purple tones and lot's of graining movement. Very nice wood!

The unique thing about it is that it has places where it features that "cat ear" shape.
I think I have a slice but, it might have some insect holes in it.

You've got some very interesting stuff in your stash. I wonder what else you have that might be just sitting around.

Todays set is done in some very interesting walnut burl. I got a block that has these wild colors and movement in it. It's very cool stuff! The burl coverage ran every which direction through it resulting in some great beauty.
I'm sure there will be other pics as the block pieces dry enough to use.
    Enjoy!

I wish my photogrphy could do these justice, but in seeing the pics, sadly, that is not the case.

Today we have a couple of random pics of grips that were made for friends with some beautiful woods.
    Amboyna Burl and Buckeye Burl
    Enjoy,

Todays offering is done in Box Elder Burl. This set was clear stabilized, but this wood is a favorite for color stabilization due to its widely varied densities throughout. We'll get into that later as the colorized grips pics come up.
Plenty gorgeous on it's own if you ask me!
    Enjoy,

Today's set is done in Madrone Burl. This wood has a very soft watermelon color and the burl ranges from the burl cluster type to the folding figure as shown here. Lot's of depth - it's a very nice wood! Lightweight, so it should be stabilized prior to fabrication when being used in grip panels.
    Enjoy!

I usually don't post pics on Fridays, since it's a shop day and I like to cram every minute I can out there into the day, but I had to answer an email anyway, so here is another set.
This set is done in Redwood Burl. Very tight smooth clusters of burl eyes, and great movement through the wood make Redwood Burl beautful! The depth and chatoyance in the wood make it irresistable. Unfortunately, the last two things are hard (more like impossible for me) to capture in a picture. Beautiful stuff!
    Enjoy,

    Very nice, Sarge!

Did those grips have to be stabilized? Or is that something you have to do for all burls?

Not all burls need to be stabilized. Buckeye Burl is so light and "airy" that stabilization really is needed in that case. Redwood Burl is much the same usually. It's really a case by case decision with most woods.

Todays set is Box Elder Burl that has been color stabilized. All this means is that a tint has been added to the normal clear stabilization process. This set was done in teal. The pictures don't really do it any justice. It's really quite nice. Being more of a purist, I prefer the natural colors more, but many customers are excited by these new blanks I've got coming into the shop. They ARE beautiful!

    Another teal set in governments.

While we're on the colorized kick, here's a couple more done with blue.

Todays set is a nice example of Walnut Burl. Lot's of eyes and the rich color - walnut is always good!

The offering of the day is Amboyna Burl. I loved the way this blank had dark at the bottom and lighter at the top. I bookmatch everything, so of course it came out that way in the grip panels also. One person remarked on how it looked like fire with the coals at the bottom. I can see that......
Anyway, however you look at it, and whatever YOU see IN it, it's beautiful stuff!
    Enjoy,
