I have enjoyed both my beautiful walnut grips Sarge made for my Officers 1911 and I have also enjoyed reading this thread and the beauty Sarge has been able post for us every day.

Well, all I can say is WOW! You guys are great! I was flooded with PM's and emails yesterday full of well wishes etc. I was overwhelmed! Thank you so much! It made my day to see that so many of you enjoy the beauty of the woods and look forward to seeing it daily.
Long story short, we'll keep this train rolling in this slot from now on. Thanks to you all and especially Bumper who was enthusiastic about continuing this......

Today's pics are a celebratory "twofer". Both are great American woods. Redwood Burl and Bird's Eye Maple. The Bird's Eye Maple is interesting in that no one can explain exactly what causes the bird's eyes to form. There have been many guesses from bug attacks, to tree rot, to atmospheric pressure, but none have been proven to play a role. One of nature's beautiful mysteries!

Bubinga has long been a favorite of mine. It can have many different figure patterns from mild to wild, and the colors range from a very flat light brown to rich red depending on the piece you're looking at. Today's set is made from a block of Red Bubinga that had some great swirling graining as well as a depth that just draws you into the wood. It's like you can actually see down into the middle of each panel.

Sarge, I forgot to ask when you showed the snake skin grips - what do you use as the base for the grips? I assume it is some kind of wood or synthetic.

A loooooong drill weekend with limited time to be on here, so I'll answer the question and get back with pics tomorrow.
On the snakewood, yes, the base layer is wood. It can be subtle so that it blends in, or it can be bright and look like a frame around the snakewood. Both are great. Not all snakewood needs this treatment, but it is cool.

Today's set shows off the beauty of Afzelia Xylay, a wonderful wood that comes from S.E. Asia. This wood, in top notch pieces, displays a very 3D figure that will fool your eyes. If you're holding the wood in your hand, you'd swear that you can run your finger over the top surface and you'll feel those ridges that you see, but when you do, it's perfectly smooth. It's very cool! This set also has some beautiful coloring to it as you can see. A beautiful wood. I hope you enjoy it!
