Is there such a thing as a small locking suitcase with handle that would be appropriate to carry a pistol to the range, provide some anti-child access security at home?

You should be able to find one at any sporting goods store that sells guns. The big difference between them is quality.

    I am looking for a locking metal briefcase/suitcase about 18"x12" and 5"
Every one that I have seen - well the locks are silly. A person could pop them with a screwdriver in two seconds.
I realize no lock will keep people out but I was hoping for something a little more substantial.
Maybe I will look at 'tool kits' instead. Would prefer a built in lock but I guess a padlock is OK too.

Check out Pelican cases. I have been using a Pelican case for photography equipment for years. They a as tuff and strong as anything you will find. Just need to pick up a couple of locks to attach to the outside and your set. Here is a link pelican cases for laptops + camera cases + shipping containers from Pelican-Case.com

I use a small Pelican case for my PX4. It has good foam padding that I "scooped" out to fit the image of the gun and extra mags. I drilled the holes in the corners just a bit for some very formidable padlocks. The case is water tight with a one-way vent. A little package of desicant helps to keep any extra moisture down that might accumulate inside the case.

I bought the case at Fry's Electronics in Irving for about $48.00 and the locks were about $10.00 for a keyed-alike set. I don't usually keep the case locked but when the grandkids come over, it gets locked and put way up high.

You can find the same case at Academy Sports but I think I remember their price being a bit higher for the same model. I can send you pics of the case if you like. Just pm me and they will be on their way.

You can't go wrong with Pelican Cases. They are very durable & you can secure a variety of things in these cases.

They are made in a variety of sizes so give them a try.
