I added a 18 lb. spring from Wilson Combat, and I could really tell the difference.

Forgive my ignorance, but what advantage does a heavier recoil spring provide?

Pro - softer recoil with heavier loads.

Con - might tend to jam with lighter loads (like wadcutter hand-loads).

In a 1911? None really. People forget "equal and opposite reaction", if it slows the slide in rearward travel, it also increases forward momentum. It doesn't help perceived recoil, it's just the opposite actually, the slide is returning to battery much faster than it was designed to. It also changes the timing of the pistol, it may cause failure to feed if your magazine springs aren't strong enough to raise the next cartridge to match the increased forward speed of the slide.
