I keep a flare gun on the boat in big open water but usually a cell phone works better but it is good insurance.

I have a flare gun, I take it with me when I fly. (small planes)

A boat would also make a flare gun usefull.

I have a small pen-type flare gun. It's OK but, not incredible.

I've never given much thought to a flare gun in my BOB; I've always concentrated on not being found.
Personally, I wouldnt want the extra weight. If I were to keep a flare gun, I'd stow it in a vehicle, not my bag.

I agree with SIXTO, the BOB is not the best place for a flare gun. I tried to infer that in my previous post, but don't feel as though I did a good job of it.

I would think that if you live in a populated area, in a normal b.o.b. a flare gun might take up space better filled with something else. But out in the country, or a boat/plane, could be a great idea. Another question though, if you are bugging out, do you really want to be found?

yes, just a quickly retrievable bag/pack full of what you think you'll need for surviving a certain type of situations for a pre-determined amount of time.

It's actually a great concept. If you are interested, do a search for bug out or survival etc. here are a few links.

A flare gun to me is not worth its weight. Everything in my bag has to be worth its weight. Use other means of signal like a whistle, markings on the ground, signal fires (mag lighter) that produce lots of smoke, even pen and paper with note stating the time, date, situation, and where you are planning on going. Just hook it on a tree to be found later by S&R. Personally, if you are in a situation where you need to be rescued, survival 101 is to stay putt.
