Crimson Trace & Modify my Gun?

Ok...so I have a question regarding a decision I'm trying to make for my S&W M&P40 full size w/ Thumb Saftey.

I'm not concerned about voiding the S&W warranty. (already cleared that with the S&W Techs) That is not a Factor here.

I really want CT grips.. I'm just not sure if I want to give up my Thumb Safety.. I need some help weighing the PRO/CONS... I Like the safety when in the backwoods or when out on the four-wheelers just incase I ever got flipped off or the gun got knocked out of my snap holster. Should I keep half the safety? or is it really not needed?

Just a thought Smith and Wesson Full Size M&P40 w/Thumb Safety doesn't allow Crimson Trace to fit my gun unless I send my gun to a gunsmith who can do one of three things: (here is my question)

Send in my gun and:

1.)Have only the right side of the thumb safety taken off allowing the CT grips to fit?

2.)Have the whole safety taken completely out of the gun and CT Grips put on?

3.)Not get Crimson Trace Grips at all?

4.) Other please feel free to post other options

I don't like the idea of removing or modifying the thumb safety.

Dump the safety, it is unnecessary! (Just something they put on the M&P to make 1911 guys feel more comfortable :yup:)

LSCurrier I thank you for the lasermax option but I just can't stand the though of two things.. the activation button for the laser unnatural spot.... and putting in an aftermarket spring instead of the stock one. Thanks though.. I'm looking into it..

Personally I don't care for external safety's on a defensive pistol, and I think lasers have their place, but once again not on a defensive pistol. So...neither.

Jackle1886 Why do you think a laser is not good on a SD gun? all the facts show other wise... natural point of aim, you focus naturally on the threat not on your sights, (thats when the laser comes in to make it easier), low light conditions are when most SD shootings occur, unnatural positions of fire etc. Just wondering? I would think that a laser would stack the odds in your favor...

If you remove the safety on a carry gun and have to use it to defend yourself. When you end up in court, the lawyers will be all over you. :hand1:

In your case I would go with removing the right side of the safety and install the CT. I have one on my M&P Compact and I would recommend it for a defensive weapon. In a defensive situation there will be no time for a true sight picture, it will be point and shoot. Since we own every round fired from the weapon I want to be sure I know where my round is going, right where the little red dot is.

Have the right side cut off. A good gunsmith will take the sub frame out and knock off the right side then "dress the wound". He would also install the factory square plug on the right side so it looks factory.

I'd much rather modify my holsters for something like this than modify my gun. I like Thumb Safeties, so if it didn't have to be completely removed on the right side, and I had a nub I could work with to manipulate the safety I'd be OK, but that's just me.

Lasers are no replacement for training. That being said, for anyone who trains lasers become useless, 99% of the time.
